Introduction
  • We decided to examine the topic of sex in the
media in order to get a better understanding of
    the impacts on
  • gender
  • sales
  • fashion trends
  • kids

4
Gender
  • Women are considered sex objects to the media
  • Body image is emphasized
  • Women generally are represented in a limited
    number of roles
  • When they appear in positions of power, they are
usually portrayed in feminine versions such as
    caring mothers

5
Gender (cont.)
  • Men are also seen as sex objects in the media
  • Attitude is usually emphasized
  • It is virtually impossible to find ads where the
    men are sensitive or vulnerable

6
Sex in Advertising
  • Sex and sexual content is mainly found in
    television
  • More than half of all shows and two-thirds of
Prime Time shows contain sexual content
  • If an advertising company can make consumers buy
the product, they will use any sexual content to
    promote there items
  • Some advertisements where sexual content can be
found are companies like Calvin Klein, Victorias
Secret, Coors Light, and Budweiser, etc.

7
Fashion Trends
  • Early 1900s Women wore large full-length
    dresses that were very feminine
  • 1920s youthful flapper trend
  • 1970s hot pants were the new trend for women
  • 1980s Celebrity fashion was highly influenced
by consumers. Madonna was know for her flashy,
    trashy, sexual style

8
Fashion Trends (cont.)
  • 1990s Television series and movie influences
    were everywhere.
  • Today Trends are becoming even sexier with the
    recreation of celebrity styles

9
Effects on Kids
  • Target audience is young children ages 6-12
  • Several icons inflict a bad influence on children
who look up to and in some cases even try to be
    just like them
  • Many artists show young girls how to use only
their sex appeal to further themselves in life
  • By making young girls think that their sexuality
is their only asset, icons may cause their fans
to have a distorted self image and low self
    esteem

10
Analyzing Sex in the Media
  • Structural-Functional
  • A. Increase in sales for a company
  • B. Celebrities do not represent the majority of
    the population in this country
  • C. People compare themselves to the super sexy
models that they see and when they fall short
of them they can be affected negatively

11
Analyzing (cont.)
  • Social-Conflict
  • There are major conflict between society and the
    society represented in the media
  • The images of beautiful women and men are usually
    digitally altered
  • The majority of consumers can never achieve the
perfection that they see in the magazines

12
Analyzing (cont.)
  • Symbolic-Interaction
  • Dramaturgical
  • Celebrities
  • Businesses
  • Parents and Children
  • Social Exchange
  • Businesses gain money from the increase in sales
caused by the sex they used to sell it
  • Celebrities earn money for their work, but
sometimes they are stamped with stereotypes
  • Children learn a false sense of reality in terms
    of body image

13
Conclusion
  • Due to the research we found, we decided that
though sexual content in the media works to sell
people and products, the overall effects on
fashion trends and kids appear to be negative.

14
Questions to Consider

    the media?

    hand?

of advertising scheme would you use to sell it?
