Less used, often misunderstood

• Often avoided because of misunderstanding of more
  complex coding
• Confusion between 440 and 490/8xx usage,
  especially for personal author series
• Misunderstanding of where title qualifiers belong
  for series statements
• Confusion in how to use the authority record
  fields in a bib record for actual cataloging
• What happens to initial articles?

How are these fields searched in the OPAC?

• Initial OPAC development made searching difficult
• Need to know which indexes include which fields
  not necessarily intuitively obvious from search
  names
• For example, in Web Voyage, the Prolific
  Author/Composer search does a better job of
  collocation when looking for specific
  author/title combinations

What catalog functions do these fields support?

• Entry is determined by the appropriate entry of
  the collective work and may be under a personal
  author, corporate author, or title

Analytic entriesAACR2R 21.30M1

• Make an analytical added entry under the heading
  for a work contained within the item being
  catalogued (see 21.7B-21.7C, 21.13B, and 21.15A
  for guidance in specific cases). Make additional
  analytical entries in accordance with the policy
  of the cataloguing agency. See also chapter 13.
• In such a case, the heading is that of the person
  or corporate body or the title under which the
  work contained is, or would be, entered. If that
  heading is for a person or body, add the title of
  the work contained to form a name-title added
  entry heading. When necessary, add the edition
  statement, date, etc., to the name-title or title
  added entry heading.
• When appropriate, substitute a uniform title (see
  chapter 25) for a title proper in a name-title or
  title analytical entry heading.

Access fields, not descriptionor are they?

• Series field sometimes is description only,
  sometimes doubles as an access point
• The tag determination should only be made AFTER
  the decision is made to trace (make an added
  entry) for the series and AFTER the form of entry
  is determined

440 vs. 490

• 440 series is traced (there is a series added
  entry) AND the authorized heading is exactly the
  same as is present on the piece Field functions
  as both a descriptive field and an access point
• 490 transcribes the series form from the piece
  description only the 1st indicator shows
  whether the series is untraced (no added entry)
  or whether the added entry is in a different form
  (8xx)

• Parentheses usually indicate a qualifier, or an
  addition to the title, which is something added
  to a heading based on AACR2, and never found on
  the piece
• A parenthetical qualifier should NEVER be found
  in a 440 field
• Should be in a 490/8xx pair if a series added
  entry is desired

Uniform Titles

• Definition of Uniform title Title chosen for
  cataloging purposes when a work has appeared
  under more than one title or in more than one
  form allows display of all manifestations of a
  work together. Uniform titles are also used to
  distinguish between and among different works
  that have the same title.

Where do title qualifiers or additions come from?

• AACR2R, 25.5B and the accompanying rule
  interpretation for conflict resolution
• Most relate to serials, including numbered and
  unnumbered monographic series)/unnumbered
  monographic series entered under title
• A few relate to serials, including numbered and
  unnumbered monographic series)/unnumbered
  monographic series entered under name heading
• A few also relate to monographs, integrating
  resources

• There are extensive rules for the construction of
  uniform title for special materials such as
  music, sacred and liturgical works, and legal
  materials
• Rules are also in Chapter 25

Personal author series

• Collection of works with individual titles which
  also bear a collective title, may be numbered,
  and are entered under a personal name
• Examples

Initial articles

• Since there is no way to tell the computer to
  ignore initial articles in the title portion of a
  name/title entry, initial articles are DROPPED in
  a t
• The exception is if a uniform title files under
  that article (name of a person or a place).

• 130 in the authority record may be used as the
  440 in the bibliographic record under what
  circumstances???

• If the series is going to be traced (have an
  added entry) AND the form of heading in the
  authority record is EXACTLY the same as the form
  on the piece
• Otherwise, the form on the piece is in the 490
  with 1st indicator 1 and the series added entry
  is in the 830
• May also be used as a subject added entry (630)
  or related added entry (730)
