    tickets to their concert? Why?
  • If you were walking down the street and a man
pointed to a nearby house and said it was yours.
Would you believe him? What if he gave you a
deed that had your name on it?

5
In the Catechism (1131)
  • Sacraments are efficacious signs of grace,
instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church,
by which divine life is dispensed to us. The
visible rites by which the sacraments are
celebrated signify and make present the graces
proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in
those who receive them with the required
    dispositions.
  • Try saying that three times fast.

6
An efficacious sing of Grace
  • What does it mean to say that sacraments are
    efficacious signs of Grace?
  • I have a check for 100 to anyone who can walk up
here and put Gods Grace in my hands.
  • Gods grace is Gods loving action within us, it
    is not a visible thing.
  • We can know Gods grace exists because it has an
    effect.
  • We know the wind exists because it causes the
trees to move, though the wind is an invisible
    reality.

7
Know that it happens!
  • The word efficacious means that they cause
    something to happen.
  • Therefore, a sacrament is not only a sign that
points to Gods invisible Grace but it also
    causes it to happen.
  • Jesus Christ gave us the sacraments so that we
could have surety that the Grace we desire has in
    fact been passed to us.

8
100 Surety
  • It is a lot easier to believe the house is yours
if your name is on the deed. Once you have the
deed, with your name on, you know 100 that it is
    yours.
  • Sacraments are a 100 guarantee that God has
granted you what you were looking for.
  • You can be sorry for a sin, beg God for
forgiveness, do 1000 things to make up for it,
but you may not ever feel convinced that God has
    forgiven that sin.
  • When you go to confession and you hear the words
of absolution (forgiveness) and you see the
priest make the sign of the cross over you. You
know 100 for sure that God has indeed forgiven
that sin. You can be free from doubt or worry.

9
Sacraments are Gods Idea
  • Each sacrament was begun (or instituted) by Jesus
    Christ.
  • Because Jesus Ascended body and soul into heaven
he entrusted the Apostles with the task of
    administering the sacraments.
  • The word sacrament means oath. It refers to
Jesus oath to be with us to the end of time.
  • Jesus Christ is guaranteed to be present to us in
    each sacrament.

10
Categories of Sacraments
  • Pay attention because you will need to know this
    later on today.
  • The seven sacraments are broken up into three
    groups.
  • Sacraments of initiation
  • Baptism Cleansing of original sin receiving
the Holy Spirit. Through baptism we become
adopted sons daughters of God. Sign Water
    Oil
  • Eucharist We celebrate Jesus death and
resurrection, by receiving the body blood of
Jesus we come into communion with Jesus. We
become one body and one blood. This means when
we die, we too can be raised to eternal life.
    Sign Bread Wine
  • Confirmation At Confirmation we are sealed with
the Holy Spirit. By professing our faith we
receive a greater share of the strength and gifts
of the Holy Spirit. Sign - Oil

11
Categories of Sacraments
  • 2 Sacraments of Healing
  • Reconciliation/Pennance/Confession This is
where we can receive Gods mercy and forgiveness
of our sins. If we make a proper Confession we
can leave with 100 surety of the forgiveness of
our sins. Sign Prayer of Absolution and the
    sign of the cross.
  • Anointing of the Sick By anointing us with oil
the priest prays for our healing. This prayer is
coupled with the forgiveness of sins. Many
people are healed of illness through this
sacrament, but healing is not guaranteed. This
sacrament helps one conform their lives to the
will of God whether he heals us or whether we are
asked to endure sickness. Sign - Oil

12
Categories of Sacraments
  • 2 Sacraments of Vocation
  • Marriage The union of one man and one woman as
husband and wife. This union is a sacrament
because it gives us training for the union with
God in Heaven. Sign Rings, public
    pronouncement, kiss
  • Holy Orders By the laying on of hands by
Bishops a man is made a deacon, priest, or
bishop. In this sacrament men devote their lives
to the service of God and the dispensation
(giving out) of the sacraments. Sign Laying on
    of Hands, Oil

Our Sweetness, and our Hope. To thee do we cry,
poor banished children of eve, to thee do we send
up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley
of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate,
Thine eyes of mercy towards us, and after this
our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy
womb, Jesus. O merciful, O Loving, O Sweet
    Virgin Mary. Amen
