7Finding information
- What to search? Where to search? How to search?
8Finding information
- What to search?
- - Defining the scope by keywords
- - Using Thesaurus
- - Using general literature / thesis
- How to search? Where to search?
- - Were now looking for references only
- - Theres different kind of resources for
references - - Theres several tools and techniques to avoid
being submerged with little-interesting
documents
9Databases and search engines 4 families
Initially, there were just publishers.
- Sites with contents internal search engine
- Ex IoP, TaylorFrancis, Elseviers Sciencedirect
10Databases and search engines 4 families
Then appeared catalogs with lists of publishers
contents.
Citation or abstract database search engine
links to contents Ex CAB, Web of Science,
library catalogs Some aggregators display a
limited package of chosen journals from several
publishers. Ex Academic search Premier
11Databases and search engines 4 families
Then file systems spanning several of those
catalogs.
Database of databases enhanced search Ex Web
of Knowledge
12Databases and search engines 4 families
And finally tools to search catalogs, files or
contents at the same time
External search engine link to database or to
contents Ex Google Scholar
Do you find this too abstract?

14ScienceDirect
- Description
- ScienceDirect is a part of Elsevier
(www.elsevier.com). Headquartered in Amsterdam,
The Netherlands, the company is the world's
largest scientific, technical and medical
information provider and publishes over 1,500

one quarter of the worlds full-text scientific,
technical and medical (STM) literature published
in 24 fields of science. - Full-text are available online for the last 10
years, and only for the publications subscribed
by the UCL.
Big,but still only ONE publisher!
How does it work?
15Science Direct www.sciencedirect.com
Advanced search (all fields)
Registration advantages
save searches last actions alerts quick
links
16BSE (http//www.bse.ucl.ac.be)
- Bibliothèque des sciences exactes
- For us, a valuable starting point as they propose
all the official stuff we can have access to. -
17SciFinder (program to install)
Versatile tool (from Thomson) centered on
chemistry (in a broad sense) 3 people at a time
at UCL !
18SciFinder (program to install)
Versatile tool (from Thomson) centered on
chemistry
19Web of Knowledge
- Description
-
- ISI Web of Knowledge, an integrated,
versatile research platform, delivers easy access
to high quality, diversified scholarly
information in the sciences, social sciences, and
arts and humanities, as well as search and
analysis tools that enhance this content. - From the company THOMSON ISI, it offers access
to several databases (Web of Science, Science
citation index, Social Sciences citation index,
Arts and Humanities citation index, Current
Contents, CAB Abstracts, Inspec with powerful
tools to manage them (Journal Citation Reports,
Essential Science Indicators, ISI Highlycited). - From 1987 to today
- updated quarterly
20Web of Knowledge www.isiknowledge.com
Topic Author Timespan Databases
Quick search, on multiple databases Poor refining
capacities
Much more search options, refining, citation
browsing
21Web of Knowledge www.isiknowledge.com
Typical result
- Direct export of references (and abstract if
desired)
E-mail alert on a chosen paper
Link to full text if available
22Google Scholar http//scholar.google.com
- Of course any search engine can be helpfull
- But this one is dedicated on academic work
Author Journal Time span Topic...
Quotes for author search
Same (or nearly same) paper from different
locations
Automatic generation of a list of authors in the
field
Customisable citation export
23You know which paper you need, how to find the
full text?
- Youve got a direct link on the website. Easy.
- You check on the BSE website if weve got a
subscription for this journal (beware of the
year!). - Ask all professors in the lab if he knows a
friend who knows a collega whose little sister is
the author or has a subscription. - Ask the prêt interbibliothèque to retrieve the
desired paper for you. (pib_at_bse.ucl.ac.be ). - Ask directly the author if he could send you a
reprint.

2) You know wich paper you need, ? How to find
the full text?
Filing
Fitting
25How to file your new articles?
Several possibilities
1) Learn them until you know them by heart.
(Thomas way)
- 2) Print them all and put them in authors
alphabetic order. - 1) Print them all and file them by topic,
technique or whatever. -
3) Let them on the website, and pray for Elsevier
not to restrict your access before you finish
your research. 4) Archive them all on your
computer, print the important ones, and get a
smart program to help you manage the whole.
26Bibliography managing tools
- Of course you can just type your list on a
spreadsheet - but theres better things to do! Using a
managing program you can do
- Direct import from search tools (you dont have
to type anything anymore) - Multi-criterion search in your own database
- Link to local full-text files and/or to web-based
content - Quick and easy reference in your written works
(in Word or LaTeX)
27Some bibliography managing tools
JabRef Free, LaTeX, platform independent
(Java) Bibus Free, OpenOffice or Word, not tested
(install difficult) OpenOffice Bibliography Free,
OpenOffice, yet to be improved (no
import) EndNote Web Free, Word, web-based,
RefWorks Com., web-based EndNote Com., (Thomson)
Word Reference manager Com. (Thomson) ProCite Com.
(Thomson), less powerful than RefManager FileMake
rPro Com., complete database managing
tools CiteULike Connotea
28JabRef http//jabref.sourceforge.net
Intended to use with LaTeX, but with several
export capabilities
29OpenOffice www.openoffice.org
- A complete office suite similar to Microsoft
Office - But free, open source and often more cleverly
designed - Amongst many, many features, lets highlight a
few - Compatibility with most open-source programs
(open document format is becoming a standard) and
with MS Office files (reads .doc .xls .ppt files) - Export into pdf format
- LaTeX-like equation editor
- Built-in bibliography database
Biblio tools not yet fully developped OK for
basic use but external tools (bibus) needed for
extended options (like import-export)
BUT
Late 2007 / spring 2008
BUT
30Bibus (http//bibus-biblio.sourceforge.net)
- Works with SQLite or MySQL databases systems
- Compatible with MsWord or OpenOffice
- Not always easy to install and import databases
- Style managing tools
31EndNote Web (www.myendnoteweb.com)
- Web-based tool primarily intended for MS Word use
(also via Web of Knowledge)
? access everywhere if youre connected
sharing folders
32EndNote Web (www.myendnoteweb.com)
MS Word toolbar (plugin)
- Allows to manage references from your online
bibliography into your Word documents. - Automatic numbering and formating
- Numerous formatting options (pre-defined)
- But
- Internet connection needed
- Slower (server connection)
- Less possibilities
33EndNote (www.endnote.com )
- Commercial software
- Very similar to jabref, with a few more
possibilities (e.g. richer search tools, nicer
import interface ) - Cite while you write (Ms word)
34And when you are writing your thesis
- How to use and manage your bibliography easily ?
? Depending on your word processor, just use the
same reference manager program
35Using Word ? EndNote
- Cite While You Write integration into Ms Word
References toolbar
But also with endnoteWeb, Bibus, Ref manager
36Using LateX ? Jabref
- LaTeX can use your .bib bibtex file, whatever
the program that created it.
LaTeX Commands \cite \usepackagenatbib \bibl
iography list of used .bib files Notes -
Youll have to compile several times - It may
be necessary to redefine in MikTeX the path to
the database (should be in
localtexmf/bibtex/bib, and MikTeX options to
refresh)
37Ready to become an artist in bibliography?
- 1) You are searching for information
- ? Databases and online search
- Web of knowledge, ScienceDirect
- 2) You know wich paper you need,
- how to find the full text?
- ? Directly from online search engine
- ? IMAP, BSE
- ? ask academics or PIB
- 3) How to file your new article?
- ? web-based managing tools (EndNoteWeb,
CiteULike,) - ? managing programs (Jabref, Bibus, EndNote,)
- ? paper hardcopy
- 4) And when you are writing your thesis
- just put dynamic references to your personal
bibliographic database!
38- Thank you !
- (And now, lets run to our long-neglected
bibliographies)
