1
In-Touch Nicaragua
  • Done by Class 3I

2
Origin Of Nicaragua
  • Nicaragua takes its name from Nicarao, chief of
the indigenous tribe that lived around during the
    late 1400s and early 1500s.

3
History Of Nicaragua
  • Nicaragua was inhabited by over a million
    indigenous Indians when Christopher Columbus
stopped briefly along its Caribbean coastline in
    1502.
  • The Spanish settled in Nicaragua twenty years
    later.
  • Nicaragua gained independence in 1838.

4
History Of Nicaragua
  • Nicaragua has suffered from political instability
from the U.S., civil war with the Contras which
ended in 1990, poverty, and foreign intervention.
  • In 2004, most of Nicaragua's international debt
was forgiven by the World Bank, and though the
country still struggles to survive, there is much
optimism in this beautiful, yet fragile land.

5
Development Of Nicaragua
  • Nicaragua has a developing market economy based
largely on agriculture (Eg. Sugarcane and rice),
light industries, and trade (Eg. Petroleum and
    tobacco).
  • Nicaragua's constitution guarantees the freedom
of speech, peaceful assembly and association,
religion, and movement within the country, as
well as foreign travel, emigration, and
    repatriation.

6
People
  • Most Nicaraguans are of both European and
indigenous ancestry, and the culture of the
    country reflects the Ibero-European and
    indigenous heritage of its people.
  • Roman Catholicism is the major religion, but
    Evangelical Protestant groups have grown
recently, and there are strong Anglican and
Moravian communities on the Caribbean coast.

7
Culture
  • Nicaragua has rich cultural traditions that
reflect long-standing, sharp class and ethnic
    cleavages.
  • Nicaraguan culture is largely a mixture of
Hispanic and Native American elements, with
    regional variations.
  • The folk traditions were expressed in beautiful
arts and crafts, popular religious ceremonies,
    and country music (corridos).
