• What is going on?

Why is pop growing so much?

• Birthrate exceeds Mortality
• Birthrate in US 4 million births/year
• Mortality in US 2.6 million deaths/year
• homeostasis is disrupted
• Life Expectancy How long an organism is
  expected to live

• When you are about 50 years old, the world will
  hold about 3.5 billion MORE people than it does
  now!
• However, resources will not increase at the same
  rate
• As of 2003, men 74 years women 80 years

• Will the high school be large enough when the 0-4
  year olds reach 9th grade?
• Will current social security funds be enough to
  support the 14-18 year old population when they
  become adults?
• Is the population an established one or is it a
  growing country?

Earths Carrying Capacity

• How many people can the Earth hold without
  harming the environment?
• Limiting factors food, water, space
• Consider food vs. living space
• More people take up more living space
• AND more people need more food so need more space
  to grow food

Humans effect on the environment

• As we use up more and more resources, we are
  degrading our biosphere
• Ex. Acid rain, urban smog, thinning ozone,
  global warming, decrease in fossil fuels,
  deforestation, pollution of fresh water, etc.
