14
What Does All This Mean?
15
It Means..
The traditional method of providing nutrition
education or information is no longer working
because it does not take into account the changes
in society
16
First Thing to Remember
  • Food is a Gift and it is Personal

17
Working with Diverse Audiences are..
  • Exciting
  • Fun
  • Interesting
  • Joyful

18
You Must Let People Know.
  • That you are sincere.
  • That you are who you say you are
  • That you and your organization are going to be
    involved for the long-term

19
Guiding Principles
  • It is all about relationships
  • Some strategies will fail
  • An attitude of developing partnership is
    critical
  • It takes time

20
Before Providing Nutrition Information
  • Get to Know Who You are Talking To By
  • Review research-based articles that would give
you an overview of the audience
  • Going into the community prior to your lesson-
    take inventory
  • Talk to people that work within the community to
see what they notice about people eating habits
  • If you can go visit the site prior to you giving
the lesson so you can take a peek at who you will
    be teaching

21
Communicating Behavior Change
  • Accept where they are
  • Make sure that every lesson has some awareness,
connection to culture, have at least one idea of
behavior change, contains action, and watch the
    clicker
  • It is ok to share a part of yourself-just not
your life story- helps with client rapport and
    establishes that you are human

22
What about if I have not Shared in the Cultural
Experience?
  • Recognize who they are
  • Culture
    Stereotype
  • Learn the Language
  • Find yourself within the culture

23
Tools of the Trade
  • Fact sheets should contain basic information
    covered in the lesson
  • Dont be too wordy- the majority of people wont
    read it all
  • Be visual
  • Use creative methods to talk about a topic that
may be difficult to explain. It is ok to connect
with other professions within the culture.

24
Tools of the Trade
  • Make your environment nutrition-friendly
  • Think like your audience- helps to gather
information but be prepared for the unusual
    question
  • Teach to your target audience
  • Check everything out with the agency you are
working with or with your institution

Scenario 1
You are currently working at an inner city
clinic. The majority of the population is
Hispanic, first and second generation. Many of
them speak English but it is very limited. The
clinics director wants to start classes on
general nutrition. You noticed that many of the
men tend to be obese and the women overweight.
The majority of people that come in the clinic
that are Hispanic is female (70/30). The class
can only be 1 hour in length. If the classes is
successful, they will add other nutrition classes
which would increase the nutrition education area
within the clinic. How would you go about
developing a lesson for this population.
28
Scenario 2
You are a consultant that works with the Veterans
Hospital. The outpatient dietitian will be out
of town within two week and you have been asked
to cover for her that week on the 12- week Men
and Heart Disease Series. The men in the group
ranges from age 35-80. However, all that are
there have been diagnosed with heart disease. The
group will be socioeconomic and racial/ethnically
mixed with all of them having limited cooking
abilities. There is usually a recipe provided and
cooking demonstration as well as sharing time of
events. Your topic will be on Fiber- the Bodys
Broom You have 1 ½ hours to discuss the topic.
29
Scenario 3
You are working with a group of health
professionals on childhood obesity. The
neighborhood school is having a welcoming fair
for the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten
students and parents. The ages range from 4-6
years. The nutrition group has a table. The
families in the community tend to be working
class with the majority being African-American
and Native-American students (makes up about 60
of the new students). Many of the parents work
and kids tend to go home to a sitter whether it
is a relative or a friend of the family. You will
not have a scheduled time to present information.
How will you get the attention of the parents to
provide nutrition education to the families?
What would be a relevant topic for this group?
