Untouchables Then and Now

• Back in the olden days, untouchables had to ring
  a bell to warn people of higher classes that they
  were coming near. This gave the other classes
  warning to steer clear so that they would not
  come in contact with an untouchable, and so that
  they wouldnt see their shadow

Untouchables Then and Now (cont.)

• In modern times, Gandhi called the untouchables
  children of God. Through his efforts, caste
  distinctions were outlawed by the Indian
  constitution. The Untouchability Act provided
  penalties for discrimination.

• However, 3,000 year old traditions do not die
  easily. Most former untouchables in India today
  still suffer from extreme poverty and caste
  discrimination.

Why is the cow a "holy cow"?
Cows were so sacred, that Hindus dont eat their
meat!

• They have given years of faithful service in
  helping man till soil and pull carts

• Provide man with food and milk

• Provide man with fuel, in the form of cow dung,
  to heat his home and cook his food
