AbstractHow personally involved do I have to
be in SPI implementation? How much does this
really cost? What should we actually expect? What
will go wrong, and how often? How do we recover
when we hit barriers? How can we prevent some of
the problems well run into? When all goes wrong,
what can I do? These are a few of the critical
questions for senior managers implementing
software process improvement (SPI)and for those
working with senior managers.This presentation
answers those very questions. It summarizes over
10 years of working with management teams across
the gamut of SPI venuesmilitary, commercial, and
nonprofitand presents the resulting lessons
learned as rules of thumb, framed in a Little
Guide. This little guide encapsulates the
essential implementation challenges that must be
faced and dealt with by the senior level of the
organization. No BS, no soft words just hard
issues and answers born of experience. John H.
Maher, Jr.John Maher worked at the SEI for ten
years, where he started the SEIs consulting
practice in organizational change. While managing
the Organizational Capability Development group,
he was a principal author of the Managing
Technological Change, Consulting Skills, and Team
Training courses at the SEI. His early work in
implementing SPI in organizations led to the
SEIs IDEAL model, and he continues to specialize
in architecting implementations. He left the SEI
in 1997, and now has a consulting practice in New
York. John has been a regular speaker at
conferences throughout the history of CMM-based
improvement.
