3Council of Academic Societies Mission Statement
The CAS is composed of faculty who represent
medical school departments and their chairs,
academic societies, and individual faculty
members. Our mission is to help the faculty of
medical schools and teaching hospitals to pursue
their primary responsibilities of research,
education, and patient care. Our goal is to help
medical faculty, their institutions, and their
societies, improve the health of all Americans.

- To accomplish its mission, the Council of
Academic Societies is committed to the following
goals. - To analyze, prioritize and articulate information
and issues relevant to the core values of
faculties and constituent societies. - To support faculty and constituent societies in
the exercise of essential core values. - To articulate the role of the medical school
faculty to academic medicine and to the public. - To foster networking among scholars.
- To ensure that the CAS represents the broad
interests of academic faculty and that
constituent societies play an actual role in the
CAS.

- Designed to give a voice to the basic science
chair societies - Organized the first meeting of basic science
chairs in Philadelphia in October, 2002 - Organized the second meeting in Salt Lake City in

summaries of the breakout sessions, have been

The goal of this recently completed project was,
to provide faculty, staff and students in AAMC
member schools, as well as members of CAS
Societies, with a clearer picture of the
significant changes that are taking place in the
medical and biological sciences as scholarly
communication moves from predominantly print to

31Task Force on Dual Degree Programs, Students and
Faculty
- Charged with exploring the impact of dual degree
programs on the medical school enterprise - Review existing data and explore existing and
ongoing studies on related topics consider the
issues presented by dual degree programs,
students and faculty and make recommendations as
