Her Life
  • Born and Lived in Amherst, Massachusetts
  • Known as the Belle of Amherst and The New
    England Nun
  • Wrote 1,775 poems, but only 7 were published
    during her lifetime.
  • Attended Amherst Academy/ Mt. Holyoke Seminary
  • Cut ties with the outside world in 1860s - never
    left the house after 1868
  • Fell in love with a Presbyterian Minister who was
    married, she had only met him once.
  • Most of her rhythms come from church hymns.
  • Only wore white toward the end of her life.
  • Some of her poetry was discovered in little
    bundles tied with blue ribbon.
  • Editors changed her poetry (punctuation,
    capitalization, word choice, rhyme).
  • Better known for her botany, than poetry in life.
