Emily Dickinson was born in Amherst,
Massachusetts. She attended Mount Holyoke Female
Seminary in New England. but severe homesickness
led her to return home after one year. In the
following years, she seldom left her house and
visitors were scarce.

Her poetry reflects her loneliness and the
speakers of her poems generally live in a state
of want.

Her Materials And Style
  • She confined her materials to the world of her
    small village, her domestic circle, her garden,
    and a few good books.
  • Her style was simple yet passionate, and marked
    by economy and concentration.

Her Works
  • Dickinson wrote more than a thousand poems during
    her lifetime, but she published only seven.
  • The first volume of her work was published in
    1890 and the last in 1955.
