Title: Linnaeus University
1Linnaeus University
- 1 January 2010
- The University of Kalmar and Växjö University
amalgamate to create a new seat of learning.
2Together we will be stronger
The University of Kalmar and Växjö University
have made a joint decision to work towards
amalgamating the two seats of learning. On 30
November 2007 the boards of the two universities
drafted a declaration of intent to present a
proposal on the merger to the Swedish government.
The plan is for Linnaeus University to open for
business on 1 January 2010.
3A modern university
- The underlying rationale for the merger between
the University of Kalmar and Växjö University is
the ambition to create a university where the
focus is fixed firmly on quality and
competitiveness. - The new university will be
-
- a fully integrated dual-campus university with
shared goals and visions - an initiator of stronger research
- bigger, more visible and more influential
- a driving force behind new forms of
collaboration and coproduction with the local
communities which it serves
4The new university will be stronger and more
competitive, and initially it will have
approximately
- 25,000 students
- 15,000 full-time equivalents
- 2,000 members of staff
- a budget of SEK 1,500 million, with SEK 350
million of this - being earmarked for research and postgraduate
studies
5Quality and competitive strength
Building on the firm foundation of the combined
resources and collective expertise of the
existing universities, together with the needs
that society has for education and research, a
new university will be created that exemplifies
the highest possible quality of operations and
competitive strength.
6Close cooperation with the community
The new university will liaise closely with the
communities that it serves. The commitment of
politicians, commerce and authorities at all
levels plays a key role in the development of the
new university. It is also crucially important
that the university delivers academic research
and education that meets the regions needs for
long-term development and skills provision. The
aspiration is to work closely with trade and
industry and the public sector on a broad
spectrum of future issues.
7Research firmly rooted in reality
- The new university will conduct research that is
highly relevant to the region at the same time as
it represents the international cutting edge in
certain areas. - All spheres of academic activity will combine
high educational standards with a strong research
performance. In subject areas with extensive
teaching activities but where the overall
research superstructure is weak, we should work
hard to bolster research. Phasing out these
courses may be considered as an alternative.
8Consolidation and development
The new university will strengthen its current
focus areas and exploit the development potential
for new ones. There is clear potential for
consolidation and development by integrating the
expertise that already exists on the two
campuses.
9Openess to other countries The
internationalization efforts will be stronger in
Linnaeus University. - Exchange programs for
students - Special programs for faculty members
10One university two sites
The new university has operations in two cities,
Kalmar and Växjö. There are no plans, neither in
the short term nor in the long term to
concentrate all operations to a single campus.
Broad-based teaching activities that satisfy
major needs will continue to be carried out on
both sites.
11One and one add up to more than two We want to
build a new university based on the collective
strengths of the two existing seats of learning.
The merger presents an opportunity to exploit the
potential to create new content and new forms of
collaboration. nyttuniversitet.se
