6We need Integrated Coastal Zone Management
- FACT The coastal zone is the most populated and
intensively used area of land or sea -
- FACT Management responsibility is held by
various sectors and agencies depending upon issue
concerned - Integrated coastal zone management is a process
that looks to integrate policies and sectors so
that the coast is managed sustainably

and consensus building - Provide a focal point for cross sector working
and information exchange - Initiate collaborative projects and lever in
funding - Provide a mechanism for community education and

- Established May 2006
- Purpose
- Internal strengthening the quality of our
services - External influencing policy legislation
- The CPWG will establish new communication
mechanisms to strengthen and support all Coastal
Partnerships and encourage stronger
representation of their work to supporting
partners and in the wider field.

National (Government Role/MMO?) leadership and
direction Strategic Direction-oversees delivery
of ICZM Strategy coastal elements of Marine
Bill. Coordinates statutory agencies. Establishes
indicators monitoring.
Sub-national (MMO?) regional seas coordination
of ICZM delivery Interprets ICZM policy, promotes
regional co-ordination, an information hub.
Sub-regional network for coordinating local
delivery where required Network provision for
practitioners, topic groups, briefings for local
delivery.
Local delivery units outreach, involves
resolves at local level Public engagement local
issues and conflict resolution outreach,
identifies problems, undertakes ICZM project
work. Either estuary officer positions or local
delivery officers sited within sub-region.

Partnership working is crucial to ICZM For the
past 10-15 years Coastal Partnerships have
provided platforms to deliver ICZM
We recognise there are limitations to our current
structures and that our reliance on voluntary
support means there are some inconsistencies
BUT! We are prepared to work together to
deliver ICZM more effectively and efficiently
