ICAM-GI Background and research objectives
Rationale and background I
  • Vital role of coastal areas (ecological,
    economical social and cultural)
  • Sensitivity either for environmental or for
    social issues.
  • Some problems
  • coastal erosion, loss of biodiversity, declining
of resource, pollution and degradation of water
quality (linked with the natural features)
  • conflicts for the use of coastal resources,
    disregarding of material and non-material
cultural heritages, deep changes in lifestyle
-e.g. due to tourism- (linked to the human
    sphere)

17
Rationale and background II
  • Mutual interrelation of the human and natural
    environment, calling for a co-ordinated
    approach
  • Paradigm the sustainable development to meet
present needs without compromising for future
generations to meet their own needs
  • The Agenda 21 of UNCED 1992 to indicates actions
    and policy for sustainability
  • Chapter 17 Integrated Coastal Management (ICM)
main tool for the sustainable development of
    coastal areas

CoastGIS 03 - Genova, 16-18 October 2003
18
Rationale and background III
  • The European Union has signed the Agenda 21 and
included the ICM among its priorities various
national and local governments have officially
included ICM into their policy but the transfer
into current management practices, is still far.
  • At the WSSD 2002, the relevance of ICM has been
again pointed out but emerged that an
    interdisciplinary cross-sectoral, science based
approach to ICM, supported by an adequate
technology is a key tool for sustainable
    development of coastal areas.

19
Rationale and background IV
  • Once fixed interdisciplinarity and science based
information as reference, Geo-Information is a
key element of knowledge and GIS (Geographical
    Information Systems) to manage the
    Geo-Information are necessary.
  • GI and GIS offer the possibility of
  • integrating information from various sources and
    related to different fields
  • collecting, elaborating, updating according with
new inputs and finally representing different
    kinds of information
  • ensuring the continuous transfer of information
among local stakeholders, decision makers, and
    ICM experts

20
ICAM and the Sixth Framework Programme
  • 6 FP (2002 - 2006) offers various opportunities
    for supporting ICAM-GI initiatives.
  • Actions already carried out
  • Expression of Interest (EoI) call in June 2002
to address the Workprogramme of the Priority
    Thematic Areas Sustainable Development and
    global Change
