- to define a thematic data model, in order to
standardise and harmonise the way to access GI
data - to define and realise a web access to thematic GI
information - to produce Technical guidelines for data

Association founded in 1992 to promote the
protection and improvement of the environment, in
particular sustainable development of ocean and
coastal areas in conformity with United Nations
policy (UNCED Agenda 21, Chapter 17) In terms of
its main objective, ICCOPS is involved in -
Promoting and carrying out research on ICAM, in
particular to harmonise the usage of natural
resources with the protection and preservation of
ecosystems - Developing multidisciplinary
approaches - Serving as a point of reference for
coastal and ocean related studies - Furthering
international networking with similar
institutions - Promoting collaboration among
researchers on the subjects mentioned above. -
Convening conferences, workshops and short
courses in this field

Land use and conflicting situations, in terms of
coastal usage, and between human activities and
the environment - Landscape evaluation and
planning - Socio-economic issues, including human
pressure - Tourism, harbours, and transport

Promotion of Scientific events organised in
order to improve the sharing of knowledge and
skills and the transfer of guidelines and
directives in the field of ICAM from the
inter-governmental organisations to
administrative bodies, professionals and other
stakeholders.

16ICAM-GI Background and research objectives
Rationale and background I
- Vital role of coastal areas (ecological,
economical social and cultural) - Sensitivity either for environmental or for
social issues. - Some problems
- coastal erosion, loss of biodiversity, declining
of resource, pollution and degradation of water
quality (linked with the natural features) - conflicts for the use of coastal resources,
disregarding of material and non-material
cultural heritages, deep changes in lifestyle
-e.g. due to tourism- (linked to the human
sphere)
17Rationale and background II
- Mutual interrelation of the human and natural
environment, calling for a co-ordinated
approach - Paradigm the sustainable development to meet
present needs without compromising for future
generations to meet their own needs - The Agenda 21 of UNCED 1992 to indicates actions
and policy for sustainability - Chapter 17 Integrated Coastal Management (ICM)
main tool for the sustainable development of
coastal areas
CoastGIS 03 - Genova, 16-18 October 2003
18Rationale and background III
- The European Union has signed the Agenda 21 and
included the ICM among its priorities various
national and local governments have officially
included ICM into their policy but the transfer
into current management practices, is still far. - At the WSSD 2002, the relevance of ICM has been
again pointed out but emerged that an
interdisciplinary cross-sectoral, science based
approach to ICM, supported by an adequate
technology is a key tool for sustainable
development of coastal areas.
19Rationale and background IV
- Once fixed interdisciplinarity and science based
information as reference, Geo-Information is a
key element of knowledge and GIS (Geographical
Information Systems) to manage the
Geo-Information are necessary. - GI and GIS offer the possibility of
- integrating information from various sources and
related to different fields - collecting, elaborating, updating according with
new inputs and finally representing different
kinds of information - ensuring the continuous transfer of information
among local stakeholders, decision makers, and
ICM experts
20ICAM and the Sixth Framework Programme
- 6 FP (2002 - 2006) offers various opportunities
for supporting ICAM-GI initiatives. - Actions already carried out

Thematic Areas Sustainable Development and
global Change - Proposal ECO-IMAGINE within the HRM - Human
Resources and Mobility Programme

24EoI ICAM- GI
- Thematic research projects about priority sectors
related to ICM, for creating sets of coastal
data, from a multi-disciplinary approach to
coastal area. - The development of a Geographical Information
infrastructure for ICM that will allow to share
interoperable geo-information, horizontal and to
support to the thematic research. - Leverage activities to exploit the ICAM-GI
results and the impact on the coastal areas
stakeholders networking and awareness campaigns,
dissemination, research transfer, education and
training initiatives (as courses and placements). - Support to European initiatives such as INSPIRE
INfrastructure for SPatial InfoRmation in Europe,
and GMES Global Monitoring for Environment and
Security
25Objectives of the Human Resources and Mobility
Activity (Marie Curie Programme)
Aimed at the development and transfer of
research competencies, the consolidation and
widening of researchers career prospects, and
the promotion of excellence in European research.
Action Conferences and Training Courses
AIM To support conferences, training courses,
summer schools, laboratory courses, workshops,
virtual events etc.
26MARIE CURIE ACTIONS - Marie Curie Conferences and
Training Courses ECO-IMAGINE European COnferences
and forum for Integrated coastal MAnagement and
Geo-INformation rEsearch
27Objective
To put in touch the state of art of GI
technologies with Integrated Coastal Management
and coastal landscape study This objective is
addressed through main streams of coastal
disciplines implemented by working groups
28ECO-IMAGINE Working Groups
- WG1 Building Coastal Knowledge and GI
- WG2 Coastal Governance, Planning and Design and
GI - WG3 The Waterfront Management and GI
- Horizontal
- Working Group on GI technology
29Approach
- Europe-wide approach to research
- multilevel approach to investigation
- ECO-IMAGINE aims to train cross-cutting
operational experts, to get an interdisciplinary,
science based approach in local coastal management
30About the content
- theoretical training by means of lectures
presenting the rationales, the general
principles, the actual needs, the mutual
relationships and the international state of art
of ICM, landscape management and GI - practical application of these concepts and
statements through case studies - field trips
- simulation exercises
- ECO-IMAGINE aims to integrate various thematic
research activities related to ICM, under the
paradigms of GeoInformation and coastal
landscape, thus creating a comprehensive training
environment.
31Some distinguishing addresses
- the relevance of the coastal landscape, as
unifying element and resource - the fostering of an interdisciplinary approach
through the integration of the sectoral
achievements - the high scientific level
- the transfer of knowledge and experience from
expert scientists to early stage researchers - the transfer of knowledge and principles from
intergovernmental organisations and scientific
environments to national local realities
32Characters
- collecting at the international level the
expertise of scientists and addressing it as a
support for knowledge and decision - supporting decision making by authorities in
charge for planning and control - increasing the effective impact for sectoral
projects - putting together a sound mix of academics,
decision makers and information technology
experts. - disseminating the work
- dealing with trans-boundary issues, for which a
specific community policy is not defined yet
33The ECO-IMAGINE events
- Along 4 years the project is structured in
- Initial Conference, to introduce the general
themes, the partners of the initiative and the
Working Groups - Three thematic Conferences of the Working Groups
- Three Training Courses (tutorials, case studies,
simulation exercises, field trips), to
practically approach the themes and to introduce
to the use of GIS for ICM - Final Conference that sums up the working groups,
making a balance of the initiative (synthesis for
each Working Group, comparison of the initial and
final state, collaboration projects arisen) - A non-temporal event a Virtual Permanent
Conference on the Web acting as tool for network
building and better integration among the
research groups
34The Virtual Permanent Conference
- a dynamic tool at the disposal of the
participants and of any people interested in the
issue - up to date overview about the developing of the
initiative - information about the WGs scientific work and
research groups - network building
- proceedings of the events
- other contributions
