FACS Issues Applications Service Learning

• Course offered for the first time at Mt. Vernon
  High School the fall semester of 2001.
• Offers students an option of documenting service
  learning hours for credit.
• Assists students in scholarship applications
  requiring service learning hours.

Why an online web based course?

• Block 4 schedule offers students flexibility in
  taking more courses during the year.
• Majority of service hours are outside of the
  classroom.
• Student are not locked into a set class time.
• Web based course allows students to work at their
  own pace within designated guidelines.

Positive Outcomes

• Flexibility for the student and instructor.
• Communications with student, agency site, and
  teacher can be done at any time during the 24
  hour day.
• Creativity by students on final project.
• Display of students work on school web site.
• Students can take 5 courses rather than 4.

• Meeting times with instructor scheduled around
  students regular class work.
• Students involved with technology
• Searching the web for service learning project
  ideas.
• Researching community agency sites.
• Displaying their technology based projects

Problems that Occurred

• MVCSC Web Site down on several occasions.
• Access to Front Page in lab that was being used
  for another class.
• Took 24-48 hours for updates to web site to be
  posted.
• Classroom computer lacks memory power.
• Have to plan ahead for technology glitches that
  instructor has no control over.

How I Overcame the Tech Problems

• Simple solutions Go to Plan B!
• Keep a backup copy of all lessons on paper.
• Be flexible and patient.
• Students and the guidance department communicated
  any problems they were having when trying to
  access the web based course.

Will this course continue at MVHS?

• YES!
• It will be modified and updated on a continuous
  bases.
• Goal for course Add scholarship information
  based upon service learning course objectives.
• IUPUI has a scholarship for students at this
  time.
• Check your local community for service learning
  scholarship information.
