3What is a Proxy?
- The UConn Proxy Account is a very useful tool for
faculty/staff/students to use. - It allows those users connecting from a different
Internet Service Provider to connect to the
Libraries databases.
4Setting up the Proxy Account
- Two ways to configure the Proxy Manual and
Automatic - Proxy works with Netscape, Internet Explorer,
and with Macs - Proxy works for Dial-Up, DSL, and Cable
- The Proxy Configuration Web Page provides
step-by-step instructions.

What configuration should I use?
6Netscape Automatic
- Using Netscape
- Netscape is the recommended browser
- Netscape Communicator 4.79 is preferred
- Netscape 6 and beyond are still being tested
for compatibility - There is no difference in setup between Windows
or Macintosh versions of Netscape

Click on the Edit menu
Go to Preferences

Select Automatic Proxy Configuration
Select Proxies
Enter http//proxy.uconn.edu3000/proxy.pac into
the URL box
click on the or box in front of Advanced
9Netscape Manual
Select Manual Proxy Configuration
Edit Preferences
Advanced Proxies
Click on the button.
OK
10Internet Explorer (versions 5.0 and up)
Automatic Proxy
- Click on the Tools Menu.
- Go to Internet Options
Automatic Proxy does NOT work with Internet
Explorer for the Macintosh

Click on the Connections Tab
Dial-Up Users Only!
If you are connecting to the Internet with a
standard dial-up, click

into the Address bar
Internet Explorer is now configured for Proxy
use!.

- An option in case the Automatic Configuration
doesnt work. - Slower than the Automatic
- Must be configured every time users want to
connect - Wont work with a proprietary browsers such as
AOL, Juno, etc.

Click on the checkbox Use A Proxy Server for This
Connection.

- UConn subscribes to over 240 Web-Based,
commercially-produced research and citation
databases. Most of these resources are limited to
the UConn community - Databases include InfoTrac, ABI Inform, PsycInfo,
Sociological Abstracts, ERIC, Grove Dictionary of
Art Online, Web of Science, and more - http//www.lib.uconn.edu/online/databases/
20Find Your Net ID
Who is eligible for a Proxy Account?
All faculty, staff, and students already have
Proxy Accounts automatically generated for them
through their NetID
21Downloads
Will my Account work with a Proprietary (AOL,
Juno, etc...)?
Proxy will not work with a proprietary browser
such as AOL, Juno, Compuserv, etc. however, you
can sidestep this issue by downloading Netscape
or Internet Explorer.
