  • New e-mail system to be made operational January
    24th
  • Changed from the previously announced January
    11th date to avoid risk of problems during
    Drop-Add period
  • Case Research Institute, the new University
    Hospitals/CWRU joint medical research facility
    located at Cornell and Circle Drive, will include
    CWRU network infrastructure
  • A new high speed network link is to be
    established between the Cleveland Clinic
    Foundation and CWRU to provide services for the
    new medical school

Recent Problems
  • Port scanning and off-campus performance
  • Cisco IDS (intrusion detection system) and Cisco
    PIX firewall now in operation
  • Port scanning no longer causing disruption of the
    off-campus connection
  • Some minor problems affecting a few systems due
    to idiosyncrasies of the new system have been
    corrected
  • New problem KaZaa v2
  • KaZaa peer-to-peer filesharing software has been
    causing off-campus outgoing bandwidth to hit the
    limit
  • Action has been taken to block KaZaa servers
    manually until appropriate signature detection
    mechanisms are available for the packetshaper

Update ITP Network Upgrade
  • Gigabit Ethernet deployment now well into Phase
    IV (Health Science Complex) with installations
    currently taking place in the Medical School
  • East Wing and Sears Tower complete
  • Work underway in the Wood Building
  • Phase I, II, III complete
  • Phase Va equipment has arrived, electrical work
    is done
  • Installation planning meeting for Phase Va and Vb
    is January 13
  • Wireless
  • Installing access points in Phase III areas
  • MSASS, Adelbert construction in progress,
    Wickenden is next
  • Eudora e-mail problem resolved, driver is
    available on the SoftwareCenter

Update - Portal
  • Portal beta system expected to be made
    operational early in the Spring semester

Update LDAP, E-mail and Calendaring
  • On January 24, a complete switch will be made off
    of the current e-mail system
  • Old system will be shut off
  • During a brief outage, mailboxes will be moved to
    the new system and e-mail will be re-directed to
    proper systems
  • New system will be turned on
  • Current e-mail client configuration will work, no
    changes necessary
  • Outgoing or SMTP server smtp.cwru.edu
  • Incoming or POP server pop.cwru.edu
  • The switchover should be invisible to end-users
  • No configuration changes required for
    departmental e-mail servers
  • IMAP will be available after the changeover, Web
    access via portal
  • 100 MB mail folder for IMAP
  • Limit on the size of a message is 6 MB

Update Off-campus link
  • Upgrade from OC-3 (155 Mb/s) to OC-12 (622 Mb/s)
    is expected to be completed by early January
