Title: OUR GLOBAL VILLAGE
1OUR GLOBAL VILLAGE
2Our earth is a very crowded place and get- ting
more crowded all the time.
- PEOPLE 6 billion 200 hundred million
- 23 Countries have over 50 million people
- 10 Countries have over 100,000,000
- China has 1 billion 300 million
3- Every day the world eats enough wheat to make a
loaf - as heavy as three Empire State Buildings. There
is no - Shortage of food in the global village! If all
the food were - Divided equally, everyone would have enough to
eat. But - The food isnt divided equally. If we have 100
people - 60 people are always hungry, 26 severely
undernourished - 16 go to bed hungry sometime.
- Only 24 have enough to eat.
-
4One Day's Food
Most people rely on wheat, rice, and corn for
their basic food. Adults need about 2, 500
calories of food energy a day. West- ers consume
up to 4, 000 calories while some Africans
survive barely on 1, 800 calories. Every day,
35, 000 people die of starvation. Nutritious
vegetables may hold the answer to the worlds
food needs. Every day Americans munch through
7 million pizzas, 4, 000 tons of potato chips,
440 tons of pretzels, 15 million burgers, and 4
million gallons of ice cream.
5Electricity
Light is the one basic necessity that electricity
provides. In our village of 100 only 76 have
electricity. Those Without use candles, oil
lamps and lanterns.
6AIR AND WATER
- Fresh air and drinkable water are necessities.
In most - villages the air is healthy and clean. But not
all are so lucky. - 75 have access to a source of safe water and 25
do not. - Safe water collection is done by women or
girls. - 60 have access to adequate sanitation while 40 do
not. - 68 breathe clean air, while 32 breathe air that
is unhealthy - because of pollution.
7POSSESSIONS
- If all the money in the village were divided
evenly all would - have about 6200 each year. That does not
happen. - The richest 20 people have more than 9000 each
year. - The poorest 20 people each have less than 1 a
day. - The average cost of food, shelter and other
necessities in - The village is 4000 to 5000 per year. Many
people dont - Have enough money to meet their basic needs.
8Literacy
In a village of 100 there would only be 31 of
them who go to school and there is only one
teacher. Not all are encouraged to read, write
or think. Of the 88 people old enough to
read, 71 can read at least a little, but 17
cannot read at all. More Boys are taught to read
than girls.
9THE FUTURE
What will our village be like in the future?
Unless we act as responsible persons we are
doomed to repeat the poverty we have now but in
a larger scale. Our population will double 5
times in just 250 years and there will be
widespread shortages of food, shelter and other
resources. We all must work together to make sure
our village of the future is a good home for all
the people who live in it.
