Title: Public Art
1Case Study
A Stone Upon A Stone
2- In May 2000 DCITAs Touring Exhibition
program funded an innovative 4.5 year project to
develop and tell the story of the early
settlement history of the significance of the
craft of dry stone story walling in the shaping
of Australias cultural landscape.
3The development of the Exhibition resulted in a
series of 26 Narrative Panels which, over the
past 4 years, has toured extensively in Victoria
and New South Wales
4Until this time the story had never been
told Indeed what information and memorabilia
there was, was buried in the odd local history
book, and or, in the minds and private
collections of the descendants of early settlers.
5 The challenge was how to source the out-there
historical facts and information and to gather,
collate and bring them to life in a way that
modern day audiences would understand and
appreciate. The Australia wide scope of
the task was enormous. Whilst grass roots
community consultation sessions were held, it was
digital and online technologies that saved the
day.
6The research was initially assisted by twelve
Local Governments, Parks Victoria and the Royal
Botanic Gardens in Sydney and Mount Annan. These
instrumentalities were also host venues for the
Tour. A website provided links to participants.
7E-mails, other websites and access to electronic
databases and mapping technologies became the
core bases for conducting the research and
developing the narrative.
Seventyfour Design sponsored a dedicated website
which proved an invaluable resource for reaching
wider audiences and a key contact point for
promotion through the Media and between and
across relevant networks. http//www.astoneuponast

8An online six page Research Form was developed to
meet the curatorial and research specifications.
9- Design of the Exhibition Panels
- Text supplied to Graphic Designer on disk in
Microsoft Word. - Photographic prints and 35mm transparencies
scanned for positional - placement on a flat bed scanner, scanned at high
resolution. - Adobe Photoshop was used to correct colour
balance of images and feather edges of
photographs.

for public open space nearer to the cities
developed, Parks Victoria became public
custodians of many properties that were once
working farms or large pastoral estates. Among
them are two farms that once boasted a range of
functional boundary and dividing dry stone walls.

10- Design of the Exhibition Panels
- Panel layout Quark Xpress
- Outputs PDF Colour Laser print for proofing
- CD Roms Supplied to manufacturer at 300 dpi
11- The Manufacturers worked with a Digital Imagery
fabricating process which - uses Dye sublimation onto
- a fabric which doesnt reflect the light
- prints to paper in reverse
- the paper and fabric then go through a roller
press - at 210 deg C
12- The Digital Process
- eliminates the need for film and plates, along
with their associated material costs. - is perfect for four-colour-process work
requiring fast turnaround, or when you require a
one-off creation. - is ideal for one-off, quick-turnaround flags and
banners. - is also ideal for flags and banners
- with lots of detail that are best viewed
- up close.
13- The Exhibition has had several flow on effects
which continue to work with advanced technology. - Such as
-
- 1. A State Government funded
- Pride of Place Heritage Trail and
- Audit and Methodology which is using
- GPS Satellite System
- GIS Mapping System
- Map Info - software that links to MS Access
database - Digital camera to record, number and link to
walls

Association of Australia in July 2002. Today the
group spreads word of its activities
electronically and promotes Bi-monthly tours on
such wide reaching websites as

with the website www.astoneuponastone.com has
provided links with, and contacts from, key
