Understanding Abstract
2Pioneers of Abstract Art
The pioneers of "pure" abstract paintings were
Peit Mondarin and Kazimir Malevich. A great
example of a sculptor who worked on the abstract
sculptures is the Russian constructivist Naum
Gabo. The term "Abstract Expressionism" was
coined by the art critic Robert Coates. It was
first publicly used in a German magazine, Der
Sturm in 1919.
31
Curvilinear
It is closely associated with Celtic Art. This
modern art uses a range of abstract
motifs. Examples The Cherry Brandy by Alexander
Zakhrov Pozo Azul by Olga de Amaral
42
Color or Light-related
Light-related abstract paintings detach the art
from reality. But maintain a sliver of reality.
There is a swirl of pigment in every painting,
which eventually hides the pigment. Examples
Water Lily paintings by Claude Monet The
Talisman by Paul Serusier
53
Geometric
Mainly characterized by non-naturalistic
imagination. There is extensive use of geometric
shapes. Commonly known as 'non-objective art' or
'concrete art'. Examples The Black Circle by the
Kasimir Malevich The Broadway Boogie-Woogie by
Piet Mondrian.
64
Emotional
The common theme here is the realistic tendency
which is evoked through natural elements in a
representational manner. Inspired by Surrealism
and Biomorphic abstraction. Examples Nabel by
Jean Arp The Infinite Divisibility by YvsTangu
75
Gestural
Here the process of making the painting is more
important than the painting itself. The
brushwork is often loose and very
rapid. Examples Works of Jackson Pollock, Lee
Krasner, and Robert Motherwell
8Understanding Abstract Art
Understand the artist's reasoning behind the
picture. Give the art a meaning which suits you.
Abstract art is a genre of painting which
displays an epitome of emotions.
9Conclusion
Abstract expressionism can be considered a part
of abstract art. Abstract expressionism
historically has its roots in United States post
World War II. Abstract art is a style that breaks
every representation in real life. Most of the
time it is not even an attempt by the painter to
give an impression about the real life.
