WHY WE CAME TO AMERICA - MEXICANS
  • 19th century, parts of the southern US were
    already populated by Mexicans.
  • 1846 War with the United States 35 years after
Mexico gained its independence from Spain.
  • US bought southern Arizona and New Mexico from
    the Mexican government, automatically qualifying
those people living in these areas as US
    citizens.
  • Three surges of immigration in the 20th
    century.
  • First was in the early 1900s because of a strong
US economy and revolution in Mexico.
  • This tripled the Mexican population to 600,000.
  • The third surge occurred during the 1990s up
    until the present day.
  • Majority of these immigrants come to America to
    escape the violence in Mexico.

4
WHY WE CAME TO AMERICA PUERTO RICANS
  • 1917 Puerto Rico becomes a commonwealth of the
    United States.
  • At the end of World War II, Puerto Rican
    immigration exploded.
  • 1945 New York City had 13,000 Puerto Ricans.
  • 1946 New York City had 50,000 Puerto Ricans.
  • 1955 New York City had 700,000 Puerto Ricans.
  • Mid-1960s New York City had over 1,000,000
    Puerto Ricans.
  • Causes included a lackluster economy in Puerto
Rico, and heavy recruiting for factory jobs.
  • Many Puerto Ricans continue to migrate to visit
family or permanently move to the United States.

5
WHY WE CAME TO AMERICA - CUBANS
  • Mutual immigration between peaceful nations in
the latter part of the 19th century.
  • Cubans immigrated to the United States to work
in factories and trade crops between the
    nations.
  • Fidel Castro 1959 takes over power in Cuba.
  • This causes a mass immigration over the next few
decades with over 1,000,000 Cubans immigrating,
    most of them successful.
  • Fled in stages
  • Wealthiest Cubans fled between 1959-1962
    (200,000).
  • Cuba opened its ports in 1980 (125,000).
  • Now Cubans are restricted from immigrating
    outside of their country.

6
AREAS OF INTEREST - POPULATION
  • Over 25 Latino Los Angeles, San Diego, Miami,
    Houston, East Los Angeles (98).
  • Las Vegas has increased their Latino population
    by 100 during the 1990s.
  • 57.9 and 13.2 - Population growth percentage
in the 1990s of Latinos and the total US
    population, respectively.
  • Total Latino population in the United States is
40 million, or 14 of the population.
  • Much of the Latino population is
  • Centralized along the border.
  • Centralized in major cities.
  • Slowly creeping into the Midwest.

7
FUTURE OF LATINOS
  • Major obstacle is education. Many Latinos have
been segregated into poor school districts, not
adequately equipped to prepare these students for
    their future.
  • Experienced teachers or a new approach are
    needed.
  • One approach is the Great City Project, a
collaboration between Texas AM and the city of
Houston to train teachers to teach in inner
    cities.
  • Latino growth is expected to more than double to
100 million by 2050. This growth is expected to
    be linear.
  • Latino births in the United States Latino
    immigration to the United States
  • This will cause a different makeup of the Latino
    population in the United States.
  • Fighting gangs.
