Supplies
  • Sterile syringes and needles
  • Ten cc syringes and 20 gage, 1.5 inch needles for
collecting needle aspirates and for inoculating
    agar plates.
  • Butane lighter
  • Use a butane lighter for sterilizing aspiration
needle before using needle to streak agar plate.
  • Culture materials
  • Oxidase and Indole reagent droppers BBL
    4361181/4361185 (35 per 50 droppers)
  • Blood, MacConkey, TSI Physician Lab Supply
    1014/1006/6032 (3.10 to 3.40 per 10)
  • Poly O Antiserum
  • BBL 40707 (46 per 2 ml, one drop per test)

3
Procedure
  • Identify target tissues for culture,
  • Aspirate - 10cc syringe 1.5 20 g needle
  • Spray the aspirate on blood agar plates
  • Bend the 1.5 needle in a 45 degree angle
  • Flame until sterile
  • Use bent needle to streak the agar plate
  • Tape the edges of the agar plate.
  • Double bag the plate it is ready to ship

4
Procedure
  • For on site identification you will need the
following identification test and can use the
    following chart.
  • 3 Potassium Hydroxide (Grams)
  • Oxidase
  • Indole
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Salmonella Poly O Antiserum
  • An incubator can be made from an aquarium heater,
light socket, thermometer, and ice chest. (see
    PHAST TEST)

  • PHAST (Pre-Harvest Antibiotic Screening Test)
  • Microbial Inhibition
  • Must deal with False Pos. False Neg.
  • NOT RELIABLE TO EVALUATE THE RESIDUE STATUS OF AN
ANIMAL WHICH HAS NOT MET THE WITHDRAWAL TIME
    SPECIFIED ON AN ANTIBIOTIC LABEL

How To Give Dehorning Anesthetic
43
Why Give An Anesthetic
  • Stops most, if not all of the fight
  • Decreases most, if not all of the bawling
  • Make the job a bit easier frequently safer
  • Potential to improve performance
  • We sell performance gain efficiency
  • If an animal we depend on to make a living is
    mistreated in any fashion physically,
    nutritionally, environmentally, emotionally any
fashion it comes out of our bank account!
  • It is a nice thing to do

44
What Do You Need
  • Lidocaine see your vet
  • just like most of the new antibiotics you are
using, it is a prescription item
  • 18 gage needle 5/8 to 1
  • Syringe that will deliver 5 to 10 cc
    lidocaine

45
How Does It Work
  • Lidocaine infused in or around the CORNEAL nerve.
  • Pain control is almost immediate if given in or
    next to the nerve.

46
How To Give It
  • Palpate the CREST or RIDGE between the eye
    the horn.
  • Slide needle ½ to ¾ straight in under the ridge
    or crest.
  • Inject 5 to 10 CC lidocaine.

47
Inject half way between eye horn ½ - ¾
deep under the ridge
