5What is Canada on the Move?COTM is
- Research project
- 87 strongly agree or agree
- Health promotion project
- 79 strongly agree or agree
- Integrated research and evaluation project
- 87 strongly agree or agree
6What is Canada On The Move?Researcher Responses
- Web-based research platform
- A research platform that facilitates collection
of data from the public (as related to physical
activity and the use of pedometers) and that will
distribute that data (as appropriate) to
researchers and policy makers with the ultimate
goal of changing health care delivery. - Unique partnership initiative aimed at increasing
physical activity among Canadians - That it has been initiated, the success of which
is unclear. How success is measured is also
unclear.
7What is Canada On The Move?Policymaker Responses
- A web-based tool that will allow Canadians an
opportunity to contribute to national health
research. - Individuals can provide physical activity
information while organizations can provide
information regarding programs initiatives.
Information will be analyzed by qualified
researchers and used by those in the field in
terms of best practices for promoting healthy
living in Canada. - A wonderful source of information about physical
activity. - An innovative program, that has tremendous
potential and opportunity from a variety of
perspectives. (Research, program development and
transferability to other settings.)
8What is Canada On The Move?Practitioner
Responses
- An internet tool to assist in evaluating physical
activity promotion. - A potential motivator for employees.
- A website where Canadians can track their
progress and monitor improvement. - It can mobilize people to take actions to improve
their health as well as the health of family,
neighbours and communities through getting
involved in COTM. A unique model to integrate
research, evaluation and health promotion at
individual and community level. - It is about building capacities for people to
participate in decision-making and to take
ownership of their health and well being.
9Vision
- To improve health through health research that
identifies effective approaches to health
promotion and disease prevention.
10Mission
- To establish a national platform for data
collection, research and evaluation of programs
that support increased physical activity and
healthy eating - by engaging Canadians to provide information
that, in aggregate, will allow identification of
effective programs in health promotion and
disease prevention - through partnerships and collaboration with
public and private sector organizations
interested in addressing the epidemic of obesity.
11What is this national platform?
- Individual survey research tool
- Demographic questions
- Confidence for increasing level of physical
activity - Current level of physical activity
- Built environment (crime rate, sidewalks, shops)
- BUT could be anything with more development!
- Physical activity tracking tool
- Record physical activity in terms of steps
(pedometer based) - BUT could be anything with more development!

20Going Forward with Citizen Engagement Website
Enhancement
- Develop group toolkit based on results of Getting
Canada on the Move - This meeting will strongly shape the future
direction for COTM - Increase and improve functionality
- Incorporate other kinds of physical activity?
- Accommodate the collection of data about
children? - Facilitate the ability to create competition
between teams of individuals? - Increase awareness of the opportunity to donate
your steps to health research
21Going Forward with Practitioner Engagement Group
Toolkit
- Create mechanism to link individuals to
groups/programs - Provide visibility to engaged groups
- Provide information back to groups that will be
useful to them in determining their success
22Going Forward with Research Canadian Journal of
Public Health
- Supplement Publication in early December 2005
- 7 or 8 articles expected
- Summarize results for first year
- Develop partnerships to help fund publication
- Create a level playing field to engage new
researchers with project
23Going Forward with Research New Opportunities
- Expand research linked to COTM
- Maximize the outputs and outcomes
- RFA / RFP for new linked projects
- Working groups
- Engaging children
- New survey instruments
24Going Forward with Policymaker Engagement
- Raise awareness that COTM is an integrated
platform for engagement of researchers,
practitioners and policymakers - Identify how COTM can help with accountability
- Identify sources of support to implement the
recommendations of the meeting participants
