- The motorway A 40 is the major arterial road in
the conurbation Ruhrgebiet.
It is the connection between large settlement
areas in the conurbation as well as an important
east-west axis for long distance transportation.
The average daily traffic amounts to 132,000
vehicles. In 1998, a stretch control system got
started as a first step to improve traffic flow.
This was followed by five ramp metering systems
as a pilot in Germany in 1999.

Ramp Metering

It is the connection between large settlement
areas in the conurbation as well as an important
east-west axis for long distance transportation.
The average daily traffic amounts to 132,000
vehicles. In 1998, a stretch control system got
started as a first step to improve traffic flow.
This was followed by five ramp metering systems
as a pilot in Germany in 1999.

The positive effects of these pilots resulted in
the installation of additional systems.
Consequently 13 further systems have been
operational since May 2003.

Ramp Metering
- Almost all access points on A 40 in Bochum are
ramp metered, two access points in Essen
IntroductÃon A 40
- Some junctions with a high rate of flow (1.200
1.500 vehicles in peak hours), short ramps and/or
difficult conditions in the secondary network
(theoretical maximum capacity of ramp metering is
720 vehicles per hour 2 seconds red, 1
red-yellow, 1 green, 1 yellow 5 seconds per
cycle, resulting in 12 vehicles per minute)

- Most problems occurred in Essen, a new situation
for the drivers and the local politicians, local
newspapers demanded switching off of ramp
metering

- In the first days there were some malfunctions

- loops did not work together
- Softwareproblems, such as programs working too
inert

- behaviour of the drivers could not be simulated
- With fine-parametring every system has been
optimized and almost all problems could be
solved, only few features are still unreliable,
for example sliding switching off is still
inactive
- The consulting engineers office entrusted to
build further systems at other junctions as soon
as possible because of very good experiences
