Title: History of Cell Discovery

1
History of Cell Discovery
  • Robert Hooke
  • In 1663 Hooke observed cells in a sliver of cork.
  • Was the first to use the term cell for living
    things.

2
  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek -
  • Known as the father of microbiology
  • Was known to have made over 500 microscopes
  • Using his microscopes, he was the first to
describe muscle fibers, bacteria, and blood
    flow in capillaries

3
  • Matthias Schleiden -
  • Was a botanist who concluded that all plants are
    made of cells
  • Noted the role of the nucleus in cell division

4
  • Theodor Schwann
  • Was a professor of physiology
  • Credited as being the first to conclude that all
    animals are composed of cells
  • Schleiden and Schwann both published separate
conclusions that all living things are made up of
cells (beginning of The Cell Theory)

5
  • Rudolph Virchow
  • Years later proposed an important extension of
the cell theory that all living cells arise from
    preexisting cells

6
The Cell Theory
  • All organisms (living things) are made of one or
    more cells
  • Cells are the smallest working unit of organisms
  • All cells are produced from other cells

Organ System(groups of organs that perform
related functions)

Population(organisms of same species that
interact in an area)

an area)
