  • Since Becoming an OBFS Member in 2004
  • Began development of the CBFS Master Plan and
    Operations Manual draft documents are posted to
    the web at http//www.shsu.edu/cbfs/
  • Provide extensive support to the teaching
    missions of San Houston State University (classes
    in Biology and Geography/Geology) and Texas AM
    University (Field Entomology)
  • The CBFS serves as the primary field site for
    SHSUs REU Program, now in its 6th year and
    supports the Sam Houston State Vertebrate
    Museums Summer Education Program for 7-11 year
    olds
  • Supports active faculty and student research
    programs which have led to completion of 16
    Masters and one PhD dissertation, with over 24
  • publications and 50 presentations using data
    collected on the CBFS

  • Current Activities 2008
  • Establishment of the Applied Forensic Science
    Research Facility under construction
  • 5 acres set aside for field studies, with heavy
    emphasis on regional issues
  • 1 acre under high security fencing for
    decomposition research primary foci in
    determination of post-mortem interval and
    forensic entomology
  • Laboratory building scheduled for completion in
    Spring 2009 with osteology, sample preparation
    and preservation, and x-ray facilities
  • Pond to be completed October 2008
  • Re-engineering of five old hatchery ponds as a 5
    acre pond with wetlands
  • Will provide representative lentic habitat in
    support of teaching mission
  • Development of the Aquatic Research Complex - to
    be completed Spring 2009
  • Construction of 4 shade structures with
    artificial streams and holding tanks
  • Construction of second greenhouse structure for
    aquaculture and fisheries research
  • Installation of water delivery system to utilize
    stream water from Harmon Creek
  • Possible contributor to EarthScope site
    selection initiated in June 2008 for a sensor
    array
  • Completion of the CBFS Operations Manual to be
    posted to our website at www.shsu.edu/cbfs/

  • Repair and upgrading of station roads and
    drainage (funding request to NSF FSML pending)
  • Paving of entry road for improved research and
    teaching access
  • Increase available parking areas
  • Replace drainage culverts to improve drainage in
    high use areas
  • Development of the Education Center (Phase 1)
  • Complete construction plan for a 2000 square
    education building to support research and
    teaching mission
  • Design will include green construction
    technologies with applications for functioning
    off the grid
  • Solar panels
  • Rainwater harvesting with gray water reuse
  • Artificial wetland septic waste treatment system
  • Continue to seek out funding from university,
    public, and private funding sources for
    construction
