Title: Pollution

1
Pollution
  • Types
  • Air Pollution
  • Water Pollution

2
Pollution
  • Pollution is any material or product produced by
humans in quantity and disposed of in such a way
that interferes with the health of living
organisms and with the natural environments and
    processes of Earth
  • Pollution today results from two factors
  • Advanced technologies of the Industrial Age
  • Increased population densities in urban areas
    mostly in MDCs

3
Types of Pollutants
  • There are two types of pollutants persistent and
    non-persistent
  • Persistent pollutants remain in the environment
for many years without breaking down. They are
    mostly made by humans
  • Non-persistent pollutants do not say for long
periods because they are biodegradable. Human
waste, food, other organic material fall into
this category. Some are chemically produced

4
Air Pollution
  • Classified into two types primary air
    pollutants, and secondary air pollutants
  • Primary pollutants come directly from
    manufacturing and industrial processes like
mining, and refining that result in a release of
a variety of gases, vapours and solid particles
    in the atmosphere
  • Secondary pollutants are caused when primary
pollutants interact with each other, or other
compounds the atmosphere (smog, acid rain, acid
    deposition)

5
Water Pollution
  • Humans believed for centuries that water was a
cleaning agent capable of absorbing and purifying
    wastes
  • Today water pollution ranks as one of the most
serious environmental concerns in MDCs and LDCs
  • Water pollution has seriously affected rivers,
    lakes and oceans alike.

6
Activity 12
  • Please read text on white background only on p.
    130 140 in your text.
  • Record any definitions for any vocabulary in bold
    print.
  • Please answer all of question 1 on page 142.
  • List and briefly explain three primary air
    pollutants.

7
Activity 12 (contd)
  • 5. In a table like the one below briefly outline
how each form of secondary air pollution is
created and the affects of each.

8
Activity 12 (contd)
  • 6. Create a concept map titled Water Pollution
that outlines factors and hazards relating to
water pollution in rivers, lakes and oceans. Use
your text as the primary resource.
