Objectives
  • This tutorial is intended to give you an
    introduction to basic searching techniques when
    searching CatPac.
  • At the end of this tutorial you should be able
    to
  • Use the CatPac to search for materials by Author,
    Title, Keyword, Journal Title or Subject.

How to get to CatPac
  • You can find CatPac by going to the library home
    page.
  • From the ECU home page, click on the Linscheid
    Library link in the lower left corner.

Location of CatPac
  • CatPac is the grey box located in the upper
    left corner of our librarys home page

  • CatPac contains radio buttons for the following
    searches Keyword, Author, Subject, Title,
    Journal Title, and ISBN/ISSN.

Title Search
  • Click the title radio button.
  • Type the book title in the search box and click
    Submit.
  • Examine your results.
  • Write down the Location Call Number of the
    book.
  • Location - tells you which part of the Library to
    find the item in.
  • Call - the Call number is the unique address of
    that item in the Library. Items are arranged by
    the first letter of the call number.
  • Status - this tells you whether the item is
    available or not. You may see any of the
    following in the Status box
  • Not Checked Out (should be on the shelf ready to
    be checked out)
  • DUE 12-01-00 (is checked out and the due date is
    given)
  • MISSING (has not been returned or cannot be
    located)
  • BIND (has been sent out to be repaired)

Author Search
  • Click the Author radio button.
  • Type the authors name (last name first) in the
    search box.
  • Click Submit.
  • Write down the Location Call Number of the
    book.
  • Please see a Reference Librarian if you have
    trouble finding the book on the shelf.

Keyword SearchUse keywords to find items on a
topic.
  • Keyword searches scan the entire record. In other
    words, your search term may be in the title, book
    description, or subject headings.
  • Keyword searches are also helpful when you dont
    know the entire title of a book.
  • Click the Keyword radio button.
  • Type part of the book title in the search box and
    click Submit.
  • Locate the title you are looking for
  • Write down the location and call number.
  • Use keyword when your term may be very new, very
    distinctive, or jargon, e.g. "cyberspace",
    "HTML".

Journal Title Search
  • Click the Journal Title radio button.
  • Type the journal title in the search box and
    click Submit.
  • A journal title search gives you the location of
    the journal and lists the latest issue received.
  • All journals and magazines are located on the
    second floor of the library.
  • Note you cannot use this search function to find
    journal article titles.
  • You must use the electronic databases (in the
    Electronic Resources section of the library web
    page) to find journal article titles

Subject Search
  • Click the Subject radio button.
  • Type your subject in the search box and click
    Submit.
  • CatPac lists all books on the subject.
  • Click on the blue link next to a book title to
    find out the location and call number.
  • The Result page gives you the information you
    need to find the book on the shelf.
