Title: Energy

1
Energy
2
Nature of Energy
  • Energy is all around you.
  • Energy can be transferred.
  • You use energy when you hit a tennis ball,
compress a spring, or lift a grocery bag.
  • Energy is the ability to do work.

3
Kinetic and Potential Energy
  • Kinetic energy is energy in motion
  • Potential energy is energy that is stored in an
object. If you stretch a rubber band, you will
give it potential energy. As the rubber band is
released, potential energy is changed to kinetic
    energy.

4
Forms of Energy
  • Solar Energy
  • Chemical Energy
  • Mechanical energy
  • Electric energy
  • Sound Energy

5
Solar Energy
  • Energy that comes from the sun.
  • Solar energy is the solar radiation that reaches
    the earth.
  • Solar energy is free but the cells and collectors
    are expensive

6
Chemical Energy
  • Energy stored in fuel.
  • Released by a chemical reaction.
  • Digesting foodbonds are broken to release energy
for your body to store and use.
  • Sports your body uses energy stored in your
    muscles obtained from food.
  • Firea chemical change.

7
Mechanical Energy
  • Combination of all potential and kinetic energy
  • Water in a waterfall, Wind, and Moving vehicles

8
Electric Energy
  • Electricity of energy from an electric current
  • Appliances, Cell phones, music players and other
    battery operated appliances

9
Sound Energy
  • Energy in the form of vibrations that travel
    through the air
  • Can travel through objects

10
Changing Energy Forms
  • Batteries in a flashlight contain chemical energy
which is transferred to electric and then light
energy when the bulb is turned on.

11
Example
  • Batterieschemical energy then you turn on the
radio and there is electric energy which turns
    into sound energy.

12
Heat and Temperature
  • Heat is the transfer of thermal energy between
    objects
  • Thermal energy travels from a warmer object to a
    colder object
  • Example of a system-a set of parts acting together

13
Thermal Energy Transfer
  • 3 ways heat can move through a system
    conduction, convection, and radiation
  • Conduction-thermal energy moves directly to
    another object
  • Convection-thermal energy transferred through the
movement of a gas or liquid
  • Radiation-heat is transferred across space.

14
ExamplesMatch the thermal energy transfer method
with the picture
  • Conduction
  • Convection
  • Radiation

15
Nonrenewable Resources
  • A resource is something that can be used to
    satisfy a need.
  • Fossils are remains of dead plants and animals
    found in rock.
  • Once used they can not be replaced
  • We need to conserve our natural resources
  • Needs to be burned

16
Examples of Nonrenewable resources
17
Renewable Resources
  • A resource that can be replaced within a
    reasonable amount of time
  • Does not need to be burned
  • Solar energy
  • Falling water
  • Recycled water

18
Examples of renewable resources
19
Science Up Close
  • Hybrid Cars use both electricity and gasoline
  • Receives more miles per tank of gas than regular
    cars
  • Batteries store chemical energy until it is
    changed into electrical energy
  • Reduces pollution because less gas is released
    into the atmosphere

20
Questions
  • What are kinetic and potential energy?
  • What are some forms of energy?
  • How is heat transferred?
  • How do people use energy resources?
  • What are renewable and nonrenewable resources?
