The Washington Accord is an agreement between the
bodies responsible for accrediting professional
engineering degree programs in each of the
signatory countries. It recognizes the
substantial equivalency of programs accredited by
those bodies, and recommends that graduates of
accredited programs in any of the signatory
countries be recognized by the other countries as
having met the academic requirements for entry to
the practice of engineering. The Washington
Accord was signed in 1989.
As at March 2006, the signatory
countries/territories of the Washington Accord
are Australia Canada Republic of Ireland Hong
Kong (since 1995) Japan (since 2005) New
Zealand South Africa (since 1999) United Kingdom
United States The following countries/territorie
s have provisional signatory status and may
become members in future Germany Malaysia

- Less than 1 are members of the IEEE
