2 EIA Natural Gas Geographic
Information System
EIAGIS-NG is a geographic information system
(GIS) centered primarily on the U.S. natural gas
industry. EIAGIS-NG was developed by DOE/EIA as
an analytical and tracking tool to expand its
capabilities to study an industry undergoing
rapid deregulation and significant changes.
3Most of the Natural Gas in the U.S. Flows from
the Southwestern States Canada to the
Northeastern,Midwestern and Western Markets
Major North American Natural Gas Transportation
Corridors
4 EIAGIS
In addition to its mapping capabilities, EIAGIS
also has a user-friendly interface that was
designed expressly for those who are neither
programmers nor GIS specialists. In addition to
providing full data parsing and map generation
capabilities, it includes database management
capabilities for the capture, edit and update of
data, and the production of tabular reports. It
also has an integral data dictionary that
records and standardize the data in the system.
5Overall EIAGIS-NG Concept
6EIAGIS-NG includes the principal natural gas
pipelines operating in the United States.
7Includes Maps for
U.S. Department of Energy

- 71 U.S. Intrastate Pipelines and Local
Distribution Companies - 18 Canadian Pipeline Systems
Includes Point Locations for
- More than 1,400 Compressor Stations
- Over 9,700 Delivery Points
- Over 5,400 Receipt Points
- Over 1,300 Interstate Interconnections

- Begun in late 1993
- First phase completed June 1994
- Second phase completed February 1996
- Design
- PC-based
- Modular
- Menu and dialog box oriented
- Data Dictionary based
9Main Menu - Choose Mapping
Select this option to perform mapping functions
for pipelines and other related criteria, a
menu of all mapping options is provided
10Mapping Selection Menu
- A Mapping Selection Menu allows the user the
flexibility to - Choose by Pipeline or State
- Request Specific Types of Points to Map
- Alter the Level of Geographic Detail Desired
11Initial Map Selection Process - (Choose
State/Pipeline/Facilities)
This Menu contains all possible options of
pipelines, pipeline related points and
boundaries that can be mappedwithin the EIAGIS
System.

Data and Other display options
13The user may include supplemental data points to
be displayed.
The user may also select additional
geographic data to be mapped.
14Mapping for Several States of Northeast United
States
This Map presents the selected States and related
data requested through the previous menu. The
Pipelines show through the states selected.
15EIAGIS-NG Mapping ---
- Upon display of the requested map the user may
select from a number of options
- Alter map display, e.g., zoom in/out.
- Identify (label) points according to type.
- Perform statistical summariztion and graphing
- Execute and produce hardcopy reports of selected
data
- Display information on selected point(s)

Additional data points etc. may be added
19Sample Inquiries
- Identify electric power generating plants within
a specified distance of a pipeline, another
energy site, a highway, etc. - Determine how much underground storage capacity
is available from the largest facilities located
within an area or region. - Estimate throughput capability at selected points
along a pipeline system.
