• Sludge, composed of fibers and fillers, is the
  final solid waste recovered after treatment of
  process water in the paper mill.

• Using sludge, technically called fiberclay, as a
  component in cement-bonded fiber-board production
  can alleviate most of the paper industrys
  problem in disposing their waste materials.

• Paper Science and PCIERD of DOST

By experimenting on different mixtures of sludge,
cement and lahar, cement bonded boards of
varying thickness were produced. There are 3
common thickness 18 mm,12 mm and 6 mm boards

The boards were subjected to different tests,
including fire, acoustic, termite and even
leachability.
In bending strength and quality performance, the
cement-bonded board from paper mill sludge were
comparable with those of FPRDI wood wool cement
board and German and Japanese industrial standard
for wood wool slab cement boards.

A 42 Sq Meter 2 BR house, costing P 180,000 was
constructed to demonstrate Its viability as a
low cost but durable construction material.

The CBB Research Project won 1st Place in the
LuzViMinda Regional Category, and 2nd Place in
the National Category in the 4th National ST
Forum and Competition of DOST

Research Project, during PCIERDs 21st
Anniversary Celebration

The Model House
The pilot production of cement-bonded boards from
sludge is technically and economically feasible.
