Representative Comments on the Course
From written course evaluations
  • A great first step to getting people on the same
    page.
  • This was extremely beneficial to become a more
    effective PM.
  • The course provided a reality check for me and my
understanding and practice of project management.
  • A lot of helpful templates and ideas for managing
    projects.
  • This type of training is much needed in the
    Commonwealth!
  • I am excited about the possibilities.
  • I will certainly use this in my work projects.
  • I feel better prepared to lead and participate on
    projects.
  • Even though Ive had formal training and
experiences managing multiple large projects, I
found this training to be helpful.

Challenges to Managing ProjectsParticipants
identified challenges at the beginning of each
class. At the end, they were asked if the course
met each challenge responses are summarized
below.
  • Challenges addressed by the course
  • Lack of communication.
  • Lack of buy-in from executives.
  • Changing priorities/politics.
  • No methodology.
  • Meeting deadlines.
  • Customer satisfaction.
  • Scope creep.
  • Coordinating activities, getting organized.
  • Lack of authority of project manager.
  • Loss of funds (addressed in part).
  • Challenges not addressed by the course
  • Getting staff resources.
  • Procurement processes.
  • Details and changes to requirements.

11
Room for Improvement
  • Participants overwhelmingly believe the course
and methodology need to be mandated for IT and
    program executives and managers.
  • The course should be delivered for program staff.
  • The course could be delivered in less time with
    no reduction in quality.
  • It appears IT staff are not well informed about
OIT activities, including this course. There may
be untapped demand for the course.

12
Going Forward
  • A classroom course will be delivered soon
covering the remaining activities of the EPMM,
with those completing the first course receiving
    preference.
  • Training will be provided on requirements
    development, standards and management.
  • Once the PM standard tool is selected and
procured, the EPMM will be automated.
