  • Welcome!

  • Course Selection
  • The Course Selection Contract
  • Q A

3
Understanding the 4x4 schedule
  • Each 36-week school year is divided into two
    18-week terms (Fall Spring)
  • Each term is divided into two 9-week quarters,
which are equivalent to semesters on a
    traditional schedule

4
  • Understanding the 4x4 schedule
  • Students take 4 courses each term, for a total of
    8 courses per year
  • EACH of the 8 courses on the 4 x 4 block schedule
is the equivalent of a year-long course on a
    traditional semester schedule

5
  • Understanding the 4x4 schedule
  • At the end of each quarter, students receive a
final letter grade that is reflected on their
    high school transcript
  • Students receive 2 letter grades per course

6
Course Selection
  • To determine the courses your student should
    take, consider the following
  • Graduation College Admission Requirements
  • Aptitude
  • Interests
  • Extra-curricular Commitments

7
The 4x4 Time Commitments
  • To determine prerequisite skills and how much
time your student could spend every night on
homework, be sure to consult each course profile.
  • Pay particular attention to the homework range
for each course. The averages are written for
students who meet the department recommendations.
  • Keep in mind other student time commitments
    (athletics, arts, lessons, etc).

8
Sample 9th Grade Schedule
  • The average nightly homework expectation for
this student for both terms is about 2 hours.

9
The Course Selection Contract
  • Copies of the Course Selection Contract and this
presentation can be found on the Counseling
    Website.
  • BEFORE you fill out the Contract, be sure to read
each of the statements. Most are SDUHSD Board

Entering Courses on the Course Selection
Contract
  • First, write down your grade-level requirements.
These courses should reflect both high school
    graduation and college entrance requirements,
which can be found on the back of your Course
    Selection Contract.
  • Second, write down your electives. Please select
an alternate elective for each elective you
    choose.
  • For Application Only electives, please review
the contacts and deadlines HERE. While your
request is being processed, write in another
elective. If your application is approved, your
counselor will adjust your schedule accordingly.
  • If you are a student with an IEP, the Special
Education department will review your IEP and
ensure that your classes include any designated
support. Make sure you attach a copy of your IEP
    to your Course Selection Contract.

11
No schedule requests will be made to accommodate
athletics!
Students may select courses only, NOT teachers,
periods, or terms.
Students must enroll in a minimum of 3 classes
per term.
12
  • Before you attend Course Selection Night, please
    note the following
  • CCA counselors are only available to meet
individually with incoming parents and students
    on the designated upcoming evenings.
  • If you have additional questions about which
level of academic course(s) to take, speak with
your current teachers and current counselor!
They know your aptitude and work habits.
  • Counselors will be conducting 4-year planning
presentations AFTER the 09-10 school year begins,
    not during the registration process.
