Set
  • Can you roll your tongue?
  • Do you have the hitch hiker thumb?
  • Are you double jointed?
  • Why do we look like our parents?
  • DNA!

3
Objectives for Today!
  • The learner will construct a strand of DNA using
the sequence provided. The learner will also
demonstrate how to match the base pairs that will
    be provided.

4
Purpose!
  • The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the
basic properties of DNA and to learn how a DNA
sequence and its complementary strand are read.

5
What is DNA?
  • DNA Dideoxyribonucleic Acid
  • DNA is made up of three parts
  • Phosphate group
  • Deoxyribose group
  • Sugar
  • Base (A,T,G,C,)
  • Nitrogen Base

Can you read DNA?
  • YES!
  • Example of a DNA sequence
  • ATACAATTCCGTAATCGCGAGCT
  • TATGTTAAGGCATTAGCGCTCGA (Comp. Strand)
  • TGACGATCGATAAGGTACGATATC
  • What would its complementary strand look like?

10
Study DNA by Playing with FOOD!
  • Using the packet, construct your own DNA using
the given sequence to find the complementary
    sequence
  • Follow the directions on the worksheet carefully

Candy DNA

Fast track!!!!!!
  • What are the four bases used in DNA?
  • What is the structure of DNA called?
  • What does DNA stand for?
  • HOMEWORK
  • Practice sequencing examples
  • Next class would be a genetics lesson, on what
happens if the DNA does not fold properly.
