What is TMAL?

    success on the ACT, SAT and other standardized
    tests and in college freshman math/science
    courses.
  • Reinforces knowledge of Black history and
    inventors.
  • Two sections tutorial sessions and competitions.

  • The most important component of the program.
  • Alumni and collegiate volunteers work with PCI
    students to develop math and science skills and
    to expand knowledge of Black inventors.
  • Sessions continue throughout the NSBE year
    whether the students win in the competitions or
    not.

    program.
  • Held on the Local (mandatory), Regional and
    National levels.
  • Broken into three distinct events

  • Pre-Assessment Test should be available late
    August/early September.

Pre-Assessment Test

  • All students participating in the program must
    complete a Pre-Assessment test.
  • Contact your Regional TMAL coordinator to get a
    copy of the test.

Progress Assessment Test (PAT)?

  • 10 - 25-problem individual tests given to each
    member of each team.
  • Initiated at the beginning of each competition to
    monitor the progress of the students.
  • Used to gauge how successful the training
    sessions were prior to the competition.
  • Graded PATs should be submitted to the Regional
    TMAL Coordinator.

  • Engineering problem based on a real-life
    situation
  • Tests the teams ability to work together and use
    mathematics/science to solve a real-world problem

Quiz Bowl Competition

  • Jeopardy-style competition
  • Teams (four students) compete against each other
    to answer questions in algebra, unit conversions,
    Black inventors and decimals
  • Familiarize yourself with the TMAL software

  • ALL students participating in the TMAL program
    must register with the Regional Coordinator.
  • Registration includes completing a Pre-Assessment
    Test, Student Information sheet and an Aptitude
    survey,
  • Copies of all these documents must be obtained
    from the Regional TMAL Coordinator.
  • Unregistered participants will not be allowed to
    compete in the Regional competition and National
    Competition
  • NO EXCEPTIONS

  • Where do the TMAL tests come from?
  • All the sections of the competition are created
    by the TMAL committee headed by the National TMAL
    Coordinator. The tests are forwarded to the
    Regional Coordinator well before the
    assessment/competition dates.
  • Can a team participate in the Regional
    competitions at FRC if they have not registered?
  • No, All teams must be registered with their
    Regional Coordinator before being allowed to
    participate in the competition.

  • The objective of Kid Zone is to encourage and
    showcase Academic Excellence and understanding of
    the fundamental principles various topics covered
    in State Achievement Tests.

  • Program participation occurs through healthy
    competition in a Jeopardy! style game show
    format.
  • Questions cover a wide variety of topics, from
    NSBE History, Riddles, African American
    Scientists and Inventors history to general math
    and science curricula from the State Tests.
  • Each team consists of four (4) members 3rd 5th
    graders (including at most one 5th grader) and
    one alternate, who represent their NSBE Chapter.
