What is a Proxy

• A Proxy server is a server that takes requests
  from clients, fulfill the requests and sends the
  information back to the client.
• A circumventing proxy is a web proxy that is
  specifically made to let clients view websites
  that are normally blocked.

How Blocking Works

• Usually the blocking software has a list of
  inappropriate websites that it blocks. An
  administrator can add to the list of blocks or
  unblock some sites.
• A Web Proxy is a site where you can go to, and
  then from that site, go to other sites. The
  blocking software still thinks the user is at the
  proxy, and since the proxy site is not on the
  list of blocked sites, it allows the information
  to go through.
• The web proxy site can then be added to the
  blocking list, but then a new proxy is used.
  About a hundred are created each day

• Instead having the Internet Open to everything
  and make a list to block, have the internet
  completely blocked and then make a list to open.

Making the List

• Where did the list come from?
• Teachers were asked what websites they needed for
  their classes.

Problems

• SAS Links from pages need to be on the list as
  well.
• Grad Projects Students wanted to be able to do
  research
• Links from Links Always needed to be added

Currently

• We have a laptop cart with 15 computers. We have
  taken 3 of those computers and made them
  Guardian Free. The computers still have the
  normal protective software but not Dans
  Guardian.
• Only the most trusted students are allowed on
  them.
• Incidents of Computer Abuse have gone down!
