Title: Gods Power to Save

1
Gods Power to Save
  • The Book of Romans

2
Pauls Letter to the Romans
  • Paul, an apostle, chosen by Jesus Christ the Son
    of God (11-7).
  • He had heard that a church has been started in
Rome and greatly desired to go there to work with
    those brethren (111, 13 Acts 814-17).
  • His fruit the preaching of the gospel to all men
    (vs.14-15).
  • Rom. 116-17 The nature of that gospel, the
    theme for his entire letter.
  • The gospel is Gods power unto salvation
  • To those who believe
  • Man shall live by his faith.

3
Pauls Letter to the Romans
  • Paul desired to preach the gospel
  • In order to save the lost.
  • But also, in order to cause growth in the church.
  • For the Romans were already Christians, yet He
still desired to preach the gospel to them (vs.
    7, 8, 12, 15).
  • In this epistle we are taught to put our faith in
the power of the gospel unto salvation (vs. 16)
and how to live by faith in that gospel (vs. 17).

4
Romans 118-320SinThe Need For Salvation
  • Rom. 118-216 Gentiles need for salvation
  • Rom. 217-38 Jews need for salvation.
  • Rom. 39-20 The Universal need for salvation
  • Why preach such harsh condemnation when speaking
    of the gospel of salvation?
  • Without the knowledge of sin we have no reason to
    seek salvation (319-20).
  • All are equally sinful, therefore no one is
    greater than another.

5
Romans 321-839Justification by Faith
  • Rom. 321-31 Gods righteousness revealed.
  • Law is Gods standard of righteousness.
  • But we are condemned because we disobey the law.
  • How then can a man be made righteous?
  • 321-31 Apart from the law, revealed in Christ,
    attained by faith in Christ.
  • Rom. 41-25 Abraham as an example.
  • His righteousness came by faith, not by the law,
    not by circumcision.
  • He was fully convinced of the promises of God
    (vs. 20-21).
  • He pursued the promises of God
  • Rom. 6-8 Freedomthe result of Salvation

6
Romans 321-839Justification by Faith
  • Rom. 51-11 The blessing of justification.
  • Rom. 512-27 Condemnation through Adam,
    salvation by Grace through Christ.
  • Rom. 6 Free from sin, but servants of
    righteousness.
  • Rom. 7 Righteousness of Christ and freedom not
found in the law of Moses.
  • Rom. 8 Freedom from condemnation in Christ
alone, there we are held by the love of God.

7
Romans 9-11The Scope of Salvation
  • 91-33 God chooses to save believers.
  • Some might say, If the Jews were Gods people,
    how could they be lost?
  • God shows that we are not so by physical
connection, but by faith (Rom. 96-8, 229)
  • God has chosen to show mercy on the faithful, not
on those who trust in their own works (915-16).
  • Therefore both Jews and Gentiles can be His
people, so long as they come to Him by faith.
  • Any who reject Christ cannot be His people
    (930-33).

8
Romans 9-11The Scope of Salvation
  • 101-21 Israel chose to trust in their own
    righteousness.
  • The Jews were zealous for God, but they failed to
    listen to Him.
  • Therefore they were zealous for their own
    righteousness and not Gods (101-3).
  • In order for a person to receive salvation he
must hear the gospel, believe the gospel, confess
Christ, and obey the gospel by faith (1014-17).
  • Though the gospel was preached, Israel did not
    obey (vs. 21).

9
Romans 9-11The Scope of Salvation
  • 111-36 Jews and Gentiles have salvation through
    faith.
  • Though Many of the Jews ended up lost, God has
not cast away His people (111-2a).
  • He used their fall to bring salvation to the
    Gentiles (they crucified Christ, 1111-12).
  • By bringing salvation to the Gentiles, God sought
to provoke the Jews to jealously, causing them to
    come back to Him (1113-15).
  • The lesson for the Gentiles Do not gloat over
the Jews, for if God cast them off because of
unbelief, so He will cast you off for the same
    (1119-21).
  • But all who come to Christ by faith, whether Jew
or Gentile will be Gods people, Spiritual
    Israel.

10
Romans 121-1513The Transformed Life
  • As a result of our coming out of the world
through the gospel, we must learn to live
    according to that Gospel.
  • We must be transformed (122).
  • 121-21 In relation to overall conduct.
  • 131-7 In relation to civil authority.
  • 138-14 In relation to fellow man.
  • 141-1513 In relation to weak brethren.

11
Romans 1514-1627Conclusion and Final Comments
  • Rom. 1620 Avoid divisive persons.
  • What is divisive?
  • Contrary to the doctrine which you learned.
