Nurse Practice Act
  • Defines nursing practice in your state
  • Establishes standards for nurses

NPA Reciprocity (Endorsement)
  • Acquiring a license in another state without
    having to retake boards
  • Must be licensed in another state
  • Must meet requirements in new state
  • Temporary permit shall be issued until process is
    complete
  • Temporary permit only good for 12 months (State
    Board website- 6 months)

NPA License Renewal
  • Renewal applications will be mailed to everyone
    who holds a license
  • RN renewal on odd years LPN renewal even years
  • License expires April 30th of those years
  • If you lapse and continue practicing, you will
    considered to be practicing without a license

NPA Reasons for Denial
  • Use/possession of controlled substance
  • Fraud, dishonesty, violence, offense involving
    moral turpitude
  • Obtaining certificate/license by fraud,
    deception, misrepresentation or bribery
  • Incompetency, insane, violation of professional
    trust/confidence, placement on employee
    disqualification list
  • May be issued an initial probationary license

NPA Reasons for Revocation
  • Same as reasons for denial
  • Must wait one year from date of revocation to
    apply for re-licensure
  • Board will notify licensing authority in other
    states
  • Licensed are pulled or taken away
    indefinately

NPA Suspension
  • The nurse must stop practicing nursing
  • The period cannot exceed 3 years

NPA Probation
  • Licensee may continue to practice but are given
    either a set of restrictions or must meet certain
    conditions
  • The terms conditions can extend for up to 5
    years

NPA Censure Voluntary Surrender
  • Censure-Least restrictive basically a public
    slap on the wrist (but it stays on your record)
  • Voluntary surrender- licensee voluntarily gives
    up their license

Missouri State Board of Nursing Functions
  • Licensing certifying nurses
  • Setting fees
  • Establishes standards for nursing programs
  • Determines duration renewal of license
  • Maintain inactive list of licensees
  • Carry out disciplinary action for violators
  • Develop programs for impaired nurses

    process

  • NPA, NCLEX-PN, nursing programs, curricula,
    instructors, policies procedures, law, board of
    nursing, NAPNES other nsg organizations
  • Based on what an ordinary, prudent nurse with
    similar education experience would do in
    similar circumstances.

IV Therapy Chapter 6 MoSBON
  • Accountability to RN or prescriber
  • Calculate flow rate of infusions
  • Initiate peripheral IVs ( 3 inches)
  • Adm. TPN PPN through established lines
  • Administer pre-mixed drugs (infusion or
    piggybacks)
  • Maintain patency of locked peripheral central
    catheters w/ saline or heparin
  • Adm. Prepackaged drugs fluids through pumps

  • YOU MAY NOT
  • Administer anti-neoplastics (chemo), begin blood
    products, access central venous port, mix/add
    drugs (to anything), give IV push, remove a
    mid-line or central venous device, participate in
    IV therapy on neonates

  • NCLEX (CAT) Testing

NCLEX-PN
  • Exam can be anywhere from 85-205 questions
  • 5 hour time limit
  • To be admitted you must have your ATT
    (authorization to test) and a valid ID (drivers
    license, state ID card, passport, military ID, or
    national identification card)

  • Purpose To ensure public protection, each
    jurisdiction requires a candidate for licensure
    to pass an examination that measures the
    competencies needed to practice safely
    effectively as a newly licensed, entry-level
    practical nurse

NCLEX-PN Process
  • After graduation, your transcript will be sent to
    MoSBON
  • MoSBON will notify Pearson Vue that you are
    eligible to test
  • You will then receive an Authorization to Test
    (ATT) from Pearson Vue
  • You will receive by mail UNLESS you provided an
    email address (then correspondence will be by
    email)

NCLEX-PN Process
  • You MUST have your ATT before you can schedule
    your test
  • Your ATT will have your authorization number and
    will have validity dates
  • You must test within your validity dates
  • There will be instructions for scheduling by
    phone and by web
  • You will then be sent a confirmation (my mail or
    email)

  • You also will be fingerprinted, photographed and
    must provide a signature on the day of the exam
  • Arrive at least 30 minutes early (or you may
    forfeit your test time)
  • Friends, family children will not be permitted
    to wait in the test center or contact you

  • All personal items will be placed in secure
    storage
  • You will be observed by video audio during the
    test
  • Any type of aids are prohibited i.e. calculators,
    notebooks, etc.
  • You will be observed by a Test administrator
    (Raise your hand if your computer isnt working
    or to request a break)

  • You will be given two preprogrammed breaks
  • First (optional) break after 2 hours of testing
  • Second (optional) break is after 3 ½ hours of
    testing
  • The computer will tell you when you can take a
    break
  • Earplugs are available upon request

  • Computer NCLEX exams are scored twice
  • NO RESULTS are released at the test center (staff
    does not have access)
  • Exam results will ONLY be released by your state
    board of nursing
  • DO NOT CALL the state board of nursing, Pearson
    Vue or NCSBN for exam results

  • Your unofficial results may be obtained two
    business days after taking exam
  • By web, www.pearsonvue.com/nclex and will cost
    7.95
  • By phone, 1-900-776-2539 and will cost 9.95
  • If results are not available you will not be
    charged, once they are...you will be charged EACH
    TIME you call

NCLEX-PN Failing the Exam
  • Remember, you MAY NOT practice as a GPN at the
    instant you receive your failing results
  • You will then receive a Candidate Performance
    Report information about rescheduling

CAT Testing Computer Adaptive Testing
  • Your next question depends on how you answer the
    current questions
  • If you get it right, you get a more difficult if
    you get it wrong, you get an easier questions
  • Everyone only gets about 50 of the questions
    right
  • Someone who passes gets 50 of the more difficult
    questions correct
  • Someone who fails gets 50 of the easier
    questions correct

CAT Testing
  • You MUST answer every questions
  • Your computer will automatically shut-off when it
    has clearly consistently established
    whether you meet the minimum standards or whether
    you do not
