7One Navigation Column for all Three Databases
- The navigation column is on the left of each
screen. - As you progress in the search process, you will
find that the navigation column changes to meet
new conditions. - Because new options will appear frequently, be
certain to look at the navigation column
frequently to see your changing options. - Use the navigation buttons in the navigation
column rather than the browsers Back Button.

- Search screens are the same for Custom Newspapers
and NYS Newspapers. - Search screens are slightly different for the
National Newspaper Index, i.e. fewer search
options and a different index menu for advanced
searches.

NYS Newspapers Databases
- Type in search word(s).
- Search for words either in title, citation, or
abstract or in entire article content. Select
one button. - Limit by date. Results are sorted by date most
current displayed first. - Limit to specific journals (next slide).
- Limit by section
- Click Search

10Browse Journals --Search Multiple Journals
- Each search screen allows the publications list
to be browsed. - You can specify up to 10 publications for a
search. - Click browse. From the browse list check the
box in front of a publication to select it. Click
again to deselect or use Clear Selections. Do not
select more than 10 publications only the first
10 will be used. - In the left-hand navigation column
- Select any of the letter links to jump to that
point in the list. - Select Submit Selection to confirm your choices
and return to the search page. - Select Clear Selections to remove all check
marks. - Select Journal Details for more information about
any selected journals.
11Newspaper Section
- It is worth pointing out that the Section option
on the search screen allows you to select an
Opinion and Editorial option. - This option can be of great benefit when looking
for varying opinions on controversial issues.
12Keyword Search Results
- Search Summary
- Number of articles in each section.
- Citations divided into sections beginning with
most recent. - Click on the title or Text to see full article.

Newspapers Databases
Because a relevance search searches for and
counts the number of times the search word(s)
appear, the default is set to search for words
in entire article.

articles. - To clear the list use the Clear mark List
button in the left side navigation column.

21Search History
- A list of the searches you have made will display
as History beneath the search options on the
search screen. - To see the citations, select View.
- To clear the history list, select Start over in
the left-hand navigation column.
22Help
- Help is generally context dependant, i.e. if you
are working in advanced search and select Help,
you will get help on doing an advanced search. - Once you are on a Help screen the Help label in
the left column will read Help Index. - Use the index to find help on many other things,
including how to cite online database articles.
