Wally Learns About Adaptations
2
Wally, the young red-clawed wal, frolics amidst
the jungle with his friends. Looking for
adventure, Wally climbs up a tree and dives into
the murky pond, daring his friends to follow.
3
Sadly, none of Wallys friends followed. Timmy
the Toucan squawks that he cannot swim and will
ruin his beautiful feathers by diving in. Todd
the turtle slips into the water but cant climb
the tree for the exciting dive.

When Wally was preparing for bed later that
night, nestled in the trees, he asked his dad why
he seemed so different than his friends. His dad
replied, All animals have adaptations that help
them survive. Get a good nights rest and
tomorrow well explore more about adaptations!
5
Early the next morning Wally awoke anxious to
learn what made him unique. Wallys dad asked,
Wally, how do you climb up and down a tree?
Thinking for a minute, Wally responded, I use my
sharp claws to grab the bark and my tail for
balance. Right, his dad said, those are two
physical adaptations of a red-clawed wal.
6
But why do we live in trees? asked Wally.
Sleeping in trees helps to protect us from our
predators, like the fierce spotted croc, replied
Wallys dad. Wally trembled and began to fear for
his friends. How do Timmy and Todd protect
themselves then? asked Wally. Todds hard shell
offers him protection, and Timmy can fly from the
jaws of the croc.
7
Walking along, Wally and his dad reached the
pond. They decided to stop and snack on some
fish. Diving into the water, Wally and his dad
used their webbed feet to swim quickly and catch
the fish. Their dark color helped to camouflage
their bodies in the water.
