Joint degrees and collaborative provision audit?
  • Stephen Jackson

3
Collaborative provision audit (CPA)
  • CPA provides a means for scrutinising the
collaborative provision of a higher education
institution with degree-awarding powers where the
provision is too large or complex to be included
    in the institutional audit.
  • CPA examines the effectiveness of an awarding
    institutions internal quality assurance
structures and mechanisms for its collaborative
provision, in the light of the Code of practice
of the assurance of academic standards in higher
    education (Code of practice).

4
Code of practice
  • A13 An awarding institution that engages with
another authorised awarding body jointly to
provide a programme of study leading to a dual or
joint academic award should be able to satisfy
itself that it has the legal capacity to do so,
and that the academic standard of the award,
referenced to The framework for higher education
qualifications in England, Wales and Northern
Ireland (the Scottish Credit and Qualifications
Framework in Scotland), meets its own
expectations, irrespective of the expectations of
    the partner awarding body.

5
Aims and approaches
  • CPA shares the aims of institutional audit to
meet the public interest in knowing that awarding
institutions in England are, through their
    collaborative partners
  • providing higher education, awards and
qualifications of both an acceptable quality and
    an appropriate academic standard and
  • exercising their legal powers to award degrees in
    a proper manner.
  • CPA examines several examples of the awarding
    institutions quality assurance and academic
    standards processes for its collaborative
provision, as given effect by individual
    partnership arrangements.

6
Types of joint award
  • Shared programmes between UK higher education
    institutions with degree awarding powers.
  • Shared programmes with higher education
    institutions in other countries.
  • Dual awards.
  • Shared recognition agreements (Northern
    Consortium UK).
  • Joint validation arrangements (University
    Vocational Awards Council).

7
Overseas audit
  • 2002 University of Nottingham and the National
    University of Singapore,
  • joint delivery and award of an LLM (joint
    masters) in International Commercial Law.
  • Evaluation of University of Nottinghams
stewardship of the quality and standards of its
    joint award.
