The established opinion is that cola was invented
in USA by Dr. John Pemberton in 1885. Eventually
its not so simple. Indians used to chew coca
leaves for hundreds of years as a stimulant and
medicine. Even today its legal in Peru and
Bolivia. In the middle of 19th century European
scientists succeeded to isolate cocaine alkaloid
from coca leaves. The first one was German
chemist Friedrich Gaedcke in 1855. In 1863
Italian chemist Angelo Mariani started marketing
a wine called Vin Mariani that contained cocaine
and it was first attempt to use
cocaine-containing beverage for medicine
purposes.
3
  • In 1879 cocaine began to be used to treat
morphine addiction. Thats the reason why Dr.
Pemberton got the wine - he was morphine
addicted. Pemberton added some gradients and
started to produce a new brand Pembertons
French Wine Coca, but it was sold only like a
    cure.

4
  • New brand was not successful and Pemberton
decided to change the compounds. The main problem
was the alcohol (Dry Law) and he decided to make
new beverage based on cocaine and kola nuts. His
bookkeeper Frank Mason Robinson created a famous
name and logo, using Spencerian script.

5
In 1888 Pemberton died from an ongoing addiction
to morphine, but before he almost lost his mind
and sold the formula to four separate businessmen
and also inherited it to his sun Charley, that
dead six years later due to morphine overdose.
The most successful formula holder was Asa Griggs
Candler, he invested a lot of money in
advertisement and in 1892 he incorporated The
Coca-Cola Company, the current corporation.

Compounds
The original formula contained cocaine and kola
nuts, but the taste was disgusting. Pemberton
spent more than a year to find new formula to
improve the taste but to keep its medicine
effect. He have found great composition of 6
flavoring oils and alcohol. They are orange,
cinnamon, lemon, coriander, nutmeg, neroli. This
formula kept in secret under the name Merchandise
7X. In the end of 19th century the addictive
properties of cocaine had become clear and the
problem of cocaine abuse began to capture public
attention in the United States. Coca-Cola
manufactures changed the formula and started
using unharmful extracts of coca-leaves instead
of fresh one.

Coca-Cola Company have won over 1000 court cases.
Coca-Cola is unharmful in case we remember some
facts

Sugar and calories
Cola contains less sugar than many natural
juices. For example
Researches show that sugar doesnt cause heart
diseases, cancer, diabetes or adiposity. People
get fat when they get more calories than they can
burn.
11
Caffeine
Coca-Cola contains caffeine in very small
amounts. For example
Researches showed that caffeine in these amounts
couldnt cause any harm and doesnt cause
addiction.
12
Phosphoric acids
Phosphoric acids are main argument of Coca-Cola
rivals. People (except chemists among us )
think acid is always something negative and when
they hear that cola contains some acids they stop
buying it.

    showing the opposite.

policy of tolerance to the regime of Nazi
Germany. Some of their top executives became
members of Nazi Party. After USA entered the War

soldiers. It was very welcomed by them as a
    reminder of home.

23
Israel
  • In 1949th Coca-Cola attempted to open a plant
in Israel but was refused by government. After
that they were content not to make new attempts
to avoid potential boycott of much larger Arabian
market. But in 1966th they faced with potential
American boycott and in 1967th opened the first
bottling plant in Tel Aviv. In response, the Arab
League boycotted Coca-Cola as part of the
economic boycott of Israel for 23 years. Pepsi
Cola became their main beverage. The Coca-Cola
Company tries to return to the Arabian Market.
