TIPS ON FINDING A JOB IN MAGAZINES
  • Competition for jobs in magazines is very tough,
especially during a soft economy, but
    opportunities do exist.
  • It is important that you display a PASSION for
  • Magazines in general
  • The field of specialization for any magazine
that you are considering (e.g., travel, fashion
    or automotive)
  • The magazine itself
  • Research the magazine and its competitors to gain
a better understanding of the magazine and the
    category in which it competes.
  • Set up informal informational interviews for
added perspective before scheduling a formal
    interview.
  • Be pleasant and persistent. It will keep your
name top-of-mind. Call early to increase your
chances of speaking directly to the key person.
Call before 9 or after 5. Often they will pick up
    the phone themselves.
  • If you cannot gain access to people at the
magazine, think creatively to learn about the
magazine, e.g., talk to retailers who sell
products covered in the magazine, readers of the
    magazine, etc.
  • Your resume should list your accomplishments in a
    clear and concise manner.
  • A Stand Out Letter helps to distinguish yourself
    and your goals.
  • Triple check your submission to insure no errors
or typos check the magazine masthead to confirm
the spelling of the magazine staff and titles.

SPECIFIC TIPS FOR THOSE SEEKING JOBS IN MAGAZINE
EDITORIAL
  • The major you declare is not critical. However, a
Liberal Arts degree, which helps develop critical
thinking or degrees that involve writing are
    preferred.
  • Showcase experience and interest in the field,
such as related internships, participation in a
school paper or yearbook, proof of your being
published (more on this below), and relevant
    courses.
  • Submit a limited amount of your best writing
samples or clips (4-5 samples at most).
  • Rather than sending your resume to Personnel,
contact the magazine staff directly by writing to
senior levels below the top job.
  • Address your correspondence to the Magazine
Section Editor (e.g., the Travel Editor, if
Travel interests you) or Managing Editor vs.
    the Editor -in- Chief.

SPECIFIC TIPS FOR THOSE SEEKING BUSINESS
POSITIONS IN PUBLISHING
  • The major you declare is not critical. A Liberal
Arts degree is valued for its role in developing
critical thinking. In addition, evidence of the
    following skills are a plus
  • Competency in handling numbers
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in
    writing
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to think on your feet
  • These skills can be demonstrated through your
courses and experience and may be probed in your
    interview.
  • Some areas accept college students for entry
level positions some do not. Use informational
interviews to determine requirements for your
    position.
  • Example Entry level Advertising Sales positions
for large consumer magazines may require prior
related work experience such as sales experience
(especially at another magazine, including trade
magazines) or as a Media Planner or Buyer at an
    advertising agency
  • Rather than sending your resume to Personnel
contact the magazine staff directly by writing to
senior people in your area of interest such as
  • The Advertising Director for Advertising
