How do you detect Prostate Cancer ?
  • Serum PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen)
  • DRE (Digital Rectal Exam)
  • TRUS (Transrectal Ultrasound) and biopsyif
    either or both the DRE or PSA are abnormal

Does early detection save lives ?
YES
  • Mortality rate for Caucasian men down 14 from
    1990 to 1995
  • Rates continue to decrease 1.6 per year
  • Abnormal DREs 90 organ confined
  • Pre -PSA 1/ 3 to 1/ 2 of cancer had spread

Early Stages of Prostate Cancer Most Easily
Treated
  • Stage I Cancer cannot be felt during DRE. No
    evidence cancer has spread.
  • Stage II Tumor can be felt during DRE or is
    found in biopsy done because high PSA. No
    evidence cancer has spread.

  • Stage III Cancer has spread outside the
    prostate to nearby tissues.
  • Stage IV Cancer has spread to lymph nodes or to
    other parts of the body.
