Title: Focus 7: Jan 5
1- Focus 7 Jan 5 6
- How does the brain learn information? What are
the types of memory? - What is explicit memory?
- What is self sabotage? What are ways that
students hurt their chances to learn? - What is a positive study environment?
2How would you like to
Get better grades?
Spend LESS time studying for those good grades??
3First, some background on how memory works..
4Your brain puts information it judges to be
important into "files."
Your Brain!
Important stuff!
Unimportant stuff!
5Information placed in the short term files is
deleted frequently- from a few seconds later to
an hour or two later.
Learned the wrong way
6Unfortunately, this is the way many kids study!
DOOMED TO FAILURE!!!
Copying from a glossary or vocabulary list!
Copying answers straight from the board or notes.
Copying from others!
Cramming for tests!
Procrastinating!
7Make Your Memory Work FOR You!
8Mastery learning requires access to one of the
three types of long-term memory!
9The type YOU need to know is Explicit Memory -
facts that are learned by a conscious effort that
are remembered at will, for example, the names of
Presidents
10The "conscious effort" part is the problem
here!
11Use SQ3R - it really works!!
Used by schmarties everyvhere!
12SQ3R solves that problem!
13What NOT to do...
14Self-sabotage
15DO NOT
sit on your bed or comfy sofa or chair
allow distractions (no mp3, TV, cell phones, loud
music, your little brother)
try to cover huge amounts at one time
16DO sit at a desk or table have bright
lights clean paper pen/pencil IN
HAND books and class notes

study environment!
17Focus 8
- What is SQ3R?
- What are the steps of Survey?
- What does Q3R mean
18Step 1 SURVEY
About 5-15 minutes, depending on the length of
the chapter
19Read chapter title and look at pictures and text
on chapter title page
Read Section Headings
20Look at the pictures and read the captions!
21Read the questions at the end of the sections, if
there are any!
Find the list of vocab words and bold-face words-
read them aloud
22Read the summary. These will help you to
identify important parts of the chapter.
23MOST important of all--- Read the questions at
the end of the chapter.
24Step 2 Question
About 5-10 minutes, depending on the length of
the chapter
25Take one section at a time. Turn the
headings, subheadings, and pictures into
questions. Use your own words.
26Write the questions down! Try to come up with
interesting questions. Dont get into too many
details!
27Do NOT ask for a definition. Make the question
clear. DO ask for a comparison between 2
things ask for examples
28Read
A few minutes per section
29Don't get bogged down with the details !!!
separate the details from the main ideas.
details help you understand the main ideas.
don't expect yourself to memorize every detail!
30When you are done reading, write down answers to
your questions.
31Spread the vocab words out at the top of the
table so you can see them. Take turns reading
the questions aloud to your partner. Silently
read the chapter If you come to the answer to a
question, whisper to your partner where you found
it. DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING..YETgt
32Recite
Time take your time with this step! It might
be the most important one!
33after reading a section, pause, look away and try
to answer the questions in different words. give
examples.
34Make notes and repeat key terms and definitions
from memory! Jot down a few items that seem
important.
35Repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 for each headed section
of the chapter
36Remember...
All of this is done aloud! practicing
orally forces more areas of the brain
participate!!
37Review
Do this part at least twice- on different days!
38Frequent self-testing helps improve memory!
Information will be easier to retrieve for exams!
39review notes recite major points under each
heading!!!.
40Review with a partner! Quiz each other! Try to
stump your friend by making him or her REALLY
work hard for an answer! Many quick review
sessions are better than one looooong one!
41It works best when used BEFORE a teacher
discusses the chapter in class. That way, the
lecture itself is the review!
When should SQ3R be done?
Start early as soon as you know which chapter
comes next. THIS METHOD WILL NOT WORK
EFFECTIVELY IF YOU START IT THE NIGHT BEFORE AN
EXAM! ( But what method does?)
42When you use SQ3R before a lecture or lesson in
class, and the teacher then goes over the
material in class, and you STILL dont get it.
43it is time to speak up! See the teacher right
away before your review sessions become
impossible!
44And one more thing...
Participate actively in class every day! It
counts as REVIEW!
