"I have learned over the years that when one's

The Woman who changed a nation
  • Mrs. Parks had a firm and quiet strength to
change things that were unjust. She served as
secretary of the NAACP and later Adviser to the
NAACP Youth Council, and tried to register to
vote on several occasions when it was still
nearly impossible to do so.She had run-ins with
bus drivers and was evicted from buses.

On December 1, 1955
  • The story is that on a December evening, a woman
left work and boarded a bus for home. She was
tired her feet ached. But this was Montgomery,
Ala., in 1955, and as the bus became crowded, the
woman, the black woman, was instructed to give up
her seat to a white passenger. When she remained
seated, she did get arrested but that simple
decision eventually led to the collapse of
    institutionalized segregation in the South,
ushering in a new era of the civil rights
    movement.

    unconstitutional
