Kalbarri District High School
Community Service Program

Enterprise Education at Kalbarri DHS
In 2003 staff at Kalbarri District High School
decided to prioritise Enterprise Education in an
effort to engage unmotivated students and to
address a whole school weakness in independent
learning and organisational skills. Enterprise
Education is widely accepted as a way of giving
education real life purpose and
authenticity. KDHS Staff came up with the concept
of Theme A and Theme B.
3
Theme A
Theme A is an enterprise based subject that gives
students the opportunity research, plan,
construct and evaluate a product to be sold
within the local community. Theme A involves
students from years seven and eight working
together in small groups. The year 7/8
enterprise subject is timetabled for two periods
per week.
4
Theme B
Theme B is an enterprise based subject that gives
students the opportunity to plan, organise and
run events and activities. One of the main
purposes of his subject is to engage disenchanted
students. Another catalyst for running this
enterprise based subject was to raise the profile
of youth in Kalbarri. Theme B involves students
from years nine and ten working together in small
groups to achieve something for the community. It
has the significant time investment of four
periods per week and has four teachers.
5
  • Kalbarri CSP Aims
  • To provide links between secondary students
  • and their community.
  • Give students an understanding of the
  • volunteer organisations within their
  • community and the important role they play.
  • Provide students with opportunities to
  • develop organisational and interpersonal skills
  • in a partially out of school context.
  • Provide students with opportunities to work
  • collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Learn through Enterprise Education.
  • Raise the profile of youth in our community.

6
Semester 1 CSP Project
In semester one the four teachers involved in
Theme B decided to get students to plan and
complete projects for local volunteer and service
organisations.
After briefing students about the CSP Program
students brainstormed a list of local volunteer
and service organisations. Students then formed
small interest groups and wrote letters to
organisation leaders inviting them into school.
7
Semester 1 CSP Project
The following few lessons consisted of
organisation leaders speaking to the whole group
about the important roles that they play in our
community and working with students in small
groups to negotiate possible projects.
8
Semester 1 CSP Project
Next students worked collaboratively in their
small groups to create an action plan for their
project. The action plan was then fine tuned
with organisational leaders.
9
Planning For Their Project
  • The planning phase of this project involved
    students
  • Obtaining quotes.
  • Writing to businesses asking for donations.
  • Organising equipment.
  • Purchasing materials.
  • Liaising with outside organisations.
  • Organising transport.
  • Assisting in filling out excursion paperwork and
    risk management plans.
  • Organising a workforce.

10
Pavement Art Project
This project involved a group of six students
working with staff at the local Occasional Child
Care to paint games, numbers, letters and
characters on their surrounding cement paths.
11
Basketball/Tennis Court Clean-Up
This group of students tidied up the surrounds of
the tennis and basketball courts.
12
Senior Citizens Games Afternoon
This group liaised with the local Share and Care
Seniors group to run a games afternoon and cater
for an afternoon tea.
13
Scrubbing
This group liaised with DEC Rangers to lay scrub
on paths that they dont want people to use in
our coastal gorges. This stops wind erosion.
14
Golf Tee-Markers
This group worked with golf club volunteers to
create a History of Kalbarri Golf Club slideshow
and created tee-markers for the new nine holes.
15
St John Ambulance
This group fundraised to get some much needed
equipment for our local ambulance. They also
spent time cleaning and maintaining ambulances
and our local St Johns Sub-Centre.
16
Evaluating Our Projects
Once students had finished their project students
sought feed back form their community
organisation. Each group were obliged to promote
their community activity by writing an article
for both the school newsletter and local
newspaper. Each group had to complete a slideshow
that highlighted the history of their chosen
organisation and document the process that they
went through. The slideshows will be displayed at
our Drugs and Values Expo in term 4.
17
Successes
  • Lots of positive feedback from community
    members.
  • Building networks between community members and
    our students.
  • Students enjoyed planning with community
    members.
  • Many of the projects.

18
Failures
  • Kerb-side house numbering.
  • Sport and Recreation Group.
  • Getting students to stay engaged and motivated.
  • Getting staff with the right motivation levels.

19
Concerns
  • Student motivation levels.
  • The whats in it for me attitude.
  • Getting students to embrace the volunteer
    philosophy.
  • The name.
  • The notion of making volunteering compulsory.
  • Year nine hours not counted.
  • logistics of having groups all heading in
different directions at the same time.

20
Recommendations
  • Start with smallish projects and demonstrate the
whole process but get students to complete parts
    of the project.
  • Gradually as students get used to the process
    withdraw scaffolding.
  • Need to find the balance between school projects
completed for the school and on school site and
    community off-site projects.
  • Find staff that are motivated to facilitate this
    learning style.
