Directorate
- a) Role of Environment Directorate, Co. Hall.
- The Environment Department is responsible for
monitoring, analysing and reporting on the
quality of air, water, waste and wastewater in
County Cork in accordance with EU and national
legislation, and either enforcing or making
recommendations in respect of corrective actions.
In addition to this, the Department provides
information on environmental protection matters
to the public and to other Council Departments. - Preparation and overseeing Implementation of
County Waste Management Plan. - Creating and maintaining public environmental
awareness. - Interacting with other Directorates.
3North Cork Directorate
- Role of Environmental Services-
- To ensure that the operations required to
implement the provisions of the Waste Management
Plan are carried out- - The Collection and Disposal of Waste.
- The provision and operation of Civic Amenity and
Bring Sites. - The detection and prosecution of instances of
illegal dumping/littering. - The reduction in the level of Dereliction.
- To develop and implement a Divisional
Recreation/Amenity Policy. - Interaction with local Area Offices.

- an Act to make provision in relation to the
prevention, management - and control of waste to give effect to
provisions of certain Acts - adopted by institutions of the European
Communities in respect of - those matters to amend the Environmental
Protection Agency Act, - 1992, and to repeal certain enactments and to
provide for related - matters.
- Litter Pollution Act, 1997
- an Act to provide for the prevention and control
of litter pollution, the - prevention of the defacement of certain places
and matters relating - thereto.

- Protection of the Environment Act, 2003
- an Act to provide for the implementation of
Directive 96/61/EC of 24th September, 1996 of the
Council of the European Communities concerning
Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control and
certain other Acts adopted by the Institutions of
the European Communities, for that and other
purposes to amend the Environmental Protection
Agency Act, 1992 and the Waste Management Act,
1996, to amend the Litter Pollution Act, 1997 and
to provide for related matters.

11 Ballyguyroe Landfill Site
12Ballyguyroe Landfill
- Ballyguyroe is the name of a townland north of
Killdorrery in which a landfill site is located. - The site consists of 38 acres of which 15 acres
is waste fill to a max depth of 15 metres. - The Site contains 250,000 tonnes of mixed
household and commercial waste - The site closed for waste in September 2001.
13Ongoing Aftercare Ballyguyroe
- Operated and maintained under a revised licence
from the EPA (Licence No.2-2). - Ongoing aftercare requires that there is no
escape of harmful emissions for up to 30 years. - This requires the continious collection and safe
disposal of the leachate and gases from within
the landfill mass for up to 30 years .
14Leachate Extraction
- Extracting leachate from within the landfill
mass. - Achieved using automatic air driven submersible
pumps. - Leactate stored in purpose built HDPE lined
lagoon awaiting collection.
15Leachate Lagoon and Gas Flare
- Collection and storage of this substance.
- Leachate is the liquid product of the
decomposition of landfill matter and contains
many harmful toxins. - Note delivery into the Lagoon and safety cut off
device.
16Haul Away
- Hauled out by tanker truck.
- Currently sent to Charleville Sewage. Treatment
Plant for treatment.
